But that supplemental funding would only last through May. Applications for the funding are due July 21.

Spokespersons for the OMB and Department of Health and Human Services did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

When community-based organizations receive directly contracted federal funding, they can participate in the 340B drug discount program, which requires drugmakers to provide outpatient prescription drug discounts to qualifying health care organizations.

When these grants end, these clinics would have a much more difficult time purchasing those drugs because they’re no longer in the 340B program, according to Carl Schmid, executive director at the HIV+Hepatitis Policy Institute.

If states pick up the tab, that could help the clinics enroll in the 340B program — but that’s not a very reliable option, as states are not required to spend that money.

“Sometimes the states are a barrier, and others they’re not,” Schmid said.

HIV advocacy groups are encouraging Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and acting CDC Director Jay Bhattacharya to reverse the decision and immediately fund the program.

Appropriations

The White House’s 2027 budget request proposed eliminating $800 million of CDC HIV prevention funding, and proposed $220 million for the President’s Ending the HIV Epidemic Initiative. The House’s fiscal 2027 Labor-HHS-Education bill would match the president’s request.

HIV prevention organizations and advocacy groups are lobbying the Senate to propose more funding for HIV prevention and include language in their budget report guaranteeing direct funding to community-based organizations to conduct HIV prevention activities.

“Congress is watching grant funding right now. Especially when they appropriate the funding,” Schmid said.

Jessie Hellmann contributed to this report.

The Trump administration will not renew direct federal funding of community-based organizations that work on HIV prevention, according…

[59
251463,82250,150,23715,1340,10473,526,13962,97,32812,252,253,7231,58080,7267,79589,1343,720,3479,3123
post-774565","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health-care","tag-appropriations","tag-brand-safety","tag-budget","tag-centers-for-disease-control-and-prevention","tag-congress","tag-department-of-health-and-human-services","tag-education","tag-executive-branch","tag-health","tag-health-and-human-services","tag-health-care","tag-healthcare","tag-house","tag-human-services","tag-lobbying","tag-office-of-management-and-budget","tag-policy","tag-senate","tag-trump","tag-white-house
["GET
