{"id":774664,"date":"2026-07-20T22:19:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T22:19:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/774664\/"},"modified":"2026-07-20T22:19:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T22:19:09","slug":"lpls-good-life-deal-continues-sticky-acquisition-strategy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/774664\/","title":{"rendered":"LPL&#8217;s Good Life Deal Continues &#8216;Sticky&#8217; Acquisition Strategy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">Call it the long game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">LPL Financial affiliates with a group of advisors, often with them working as an office of supervisory jurisdiction, takes a minority stake, and when the time is right, brings them in through a full acquisition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">It\u2019s a <a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthmanagement.com\/wealth-planning\/lpl-to-acquire-one-of-its-own-branch-offices-for-the-first-time\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">long-term strategy<\/a> that analysts say is starting to play out for the country\u2019s largest independent broker\/dealer as it seeks to keep adding scale and recurring revenue. Last week, it made its latest play for such an OSJ with the acquisition of $15 billion Good Life, based in Celebration, Fla.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">While last year\u2019s acquisition of rival IBD Commonwealth Financial Network has garnered <a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthmanagement.com\/ria-news\/-6b-bartholomew-splits-from-commonwealth-maintains-lpl-as-broker-dealer\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">many of the headlines<\/a> for LPL recently, the acquisition of Good Life represents a long-term strategy that the firm will likely keep executing long beyond the dust settles from that mega M&amp;A deal, according to Diamond Consultants CEO Louis Diamond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">\u201cWith Good Life in particular, it\u2019s a continuation of their strategy,\u201d Diamond said. \u201cThey have a number of these very large enterprises and platforms that are partnered, but not really, so this allows them to formalize things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-component=\"related-article\" class=\"RelatedArticle\">Related:<a class=\"RelatedArticle-RelatedContent\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthmanagement.com\/ibd-news\/rbc-wealth-draws-1-6b-dallas-based-team-from-stifel\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">RBC Wealth Draws $1.6B Dallas-Based Team from Stifel<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">Citywire first reported that San Diego-based LPL planned to fully acquire Good Life. An LPL spokesperson wrote via email that, \u201cThis deal represents a natural next step based on the shared vision between Good Life and LPL for how advisors can operate and grow their businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">The spokesperson added that the move would not disrupt client work while allowing Good Life advisors to gain broader access to LPL\u2019s wealth platform and services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">Diamond said that full acquisition of such groups can work for advisors as well, since they are already on LPL\u2019s platform and custody with them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s also a way for founders or owners of the firms to take some chips off the table with a natural strategic acquirer that they are already operating with,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">The deal comes shortly after LPL\u2019s <a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthmanagement.com\/ria-news\/lpl-acquires-mariners-31b-platform-business\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">April acquisition of registered investment advisor<\/a> Mariner\u2019s advisor network, which had also been affiliated with LPL. That move brought in 367 advisors and $31 billion in assets, though 144 advisors joined as part of Private Advisor Group\u2019s hybrid RIA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">LPL first acquired one of its branch offices back in 2022, <a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthmanagement.com\/wealth-planning\/lpl-to-acquire-one-of-its-own-branch-offices-for-the-first-time\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to <\/a><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link ContentText-BodyTextChunk_italic\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthmanagement.com\/wealth-planning\/lpl-to-acquire-one-of-its-own-branch-offices-for-the-first-time\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wealth Management<\/a><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthmanagement.com\/wealth-planning\/lpl-to-acquire-one-of-its-own-branch-offices-for-the-first-time\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> reporting<\/a>. In 2023, it acquired Financial Advocates, an Olympia, Wash.-based LPL OSJ overseeing about $20 billion in assets. In the meantime, it regularly takes minority stakes in affiliated firms, including <a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthmanagement.com\/ibd-news\/lpl-stakes-41b-super-osj-private-advisor-group\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Private Advisor Group last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">Simon Hoyle, founder of recruiting and consulting firm RIA Choice, said LPL\u2019s strategy of buying minority or majority stakes in advisor practices makes the business \u201csticky,\u201d and is a good \u201cmethod of retaining and building recurring revenue\u201d as a publicly listed company with quarterly earnings.<\/p>\n<p data-component=\"related-article\" class=\"RelatedArticle\">Related:<a class=\"RelatedArticle-RelatedContent\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthmanagement.com\/ibd-news\/cetera-sees-momentum-in-succession-solutions\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cetera CEO Sees Succession Planning Momentum in RIA Channel<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">\u201cLPL knows bigger waves float bigger boats,\u201d Hoyle said. \u201cGetting the capital to OSJs and advisors has worked really well for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">Hoyle recalls that when LPL crossed the 10,000 advisor level in 2012, people questioned whether it could service an advisor pool as large as 20,000. Today, he noted, LPL is north of 32,000 advisors and still seems to be managing strong enough service to retain teams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">\u201cOnce you\u2019ve got everything\u2014your whole practice, your clients, over in a particular regulatory firm, and if you\u2019re in a spot where you wanted to retire in the next few years &#8230; you can find benefit after benefit after benefit in staying with them,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I don\u2019t think any of these would be really big benefits if LPL didn\u2019t do such a good job handling the service for such a large group of advisors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">There has, however, been well-documented attrition among<a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthmanagement.com\/keyword\/lpl-commonwealth\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> advisor teams<\/a> following LPL\u2019s full acquisition of Commonwealth last year. The deal has seen a number of Commonwealth teams <a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthmanagement.com\/ibd-news\/commonwealth-loses-a-dozen-advisors-to-rival-broker-dealers\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">depart for firms<\/a> such as Cetera, Kestra and Arakadios, as well as to the RIA space either <a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthmanagement.com\/ria-news\/six-commonwealth-firms-link-up-to-create-4b-ria-kintra\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">on their own<\/a> or with aggregators such as <a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthmanagement.com\/ria-news\/merit-acquires-1-2b-commonwealth-practice-in-the-midwest\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Merit Financial Advisors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-component=\"related-article\" class=\"RelatedArticle\">Related:<a class=\"RelatedArticle-RelatedContent\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthmanagement.com\/ibd-news\/lpl-financial-adds-24b-highwater-wealth-team\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">LPL Financial Adds $2.4B HNW Team From U.S. Bank<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">According to sources, LPL recently became involved with a bidding process that included some RIA aggregators to retain a $2.1 billion Commonwealth team, Axial Financial Group. Axial is led by managing principals Paul Miller and Michael Marchese and includes a team of 29, most of whom are in Burlington, Mass., according to its website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">LPL has said it had expected some attrition and remains on track to retain 80% of the assets from the Commonwealth deal. It plans to convert the remaining advisors into the LPL platform in the fourth quarter of 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">That has led to recent staffing changes, according to the firm, by which some Commonwealth home staff have been reassigned, while others are being let go if they can\u2019t find other opportunities at the firm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">\u201cAfter more than a year of collaboration with Commonwealth, we\u2019ve reached a key milestone in shaping our future organization,\u201d the LPL spokesperson wrote. \u201cMany Commonwealth employees have been mapped to roles in the combined company, and we encourage others to explore opportunities at LPL. Our focus remains on continuity for employees and a successful transition for advisors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">When it comes to the Commonwealth deal, recruiter Hoyle is most interested in the assets, not the number of advisors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">\u201cNot all of those producers that leave are huge producers,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s client assets that pay the bills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">In the meantime, Diamond expects LPL to continue acquiring partner firms. He said part of that strategy will benefit from the market for small IBDs not being \u201cas liquid\u201d as others in wealth management.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\">\u201cThe multiples they get aren\u2019t the RIA multiples,\u201d he said. \u201cLPL is basically able to buy within less of an open market than if it were a full, banker-led process.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Call it the long game.
