The grandpa who was tossed eight feet into the air<\/a> by a rampaging bison at Yellowstone National Park has spoken out about surviving the wildly viral, bone-breaking attack \u2014 saying he was just unlucky the huge animal decided to pick him as its \u201ctarget.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carl Isom-McDaniel, 65, posted an update from his hospital bed as he recalled how he and his 13-year-old grandson stopped to take pictures of the hulking wild animal during a post-dinner walk at the Bridge Bay Campground in Wyoming on July 10.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe saw the bison and he was down, he wasn\u2019t showing aggression or anything like that,\u201d he said in a video shared by Bozeman Health in Montana<\/a>, where he underwent surgery for a broken femur.<\/p>\n

\u201cUntil it picked a target \u2014 that target happened to be me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Isom-McDaniel, from Kendall, Washington, prioritized getting his grandson safely out of the way, and then tried to avoid being taken down by the animal, which can weigh up to 2,000 pounds, by running through trees.<\/p>\n

But \u201cthey move faster than you could ever imagine,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe just kept coming and he was more aggressive and as soon as he got off that tree he launched me in the air,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t get bruises from him launching me in the air \u2014 it was the landing that became the problem,\u201d he said of breaking his femur in four places.<\/p>\n

He was relieved he wasn\u2019t more seriously injured.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven though I was on the ground, he could\u2019ve stomped me, he could\u2019ve gored me, he could\u2019ve done anything,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Professional snapper Mike MacLeod saw the attack unfold \u2013 and said McDaniel was in \u201cgood spirits\u201d despite the heavy landing.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was in a lot of pain, but was conscious and joking the whole time,\u201d the photographer told Cowboy State Daily.<\/a><\/p>\n

Park officials previously confirmed that no action<\/a> would be taken against the now-viral bull bison. <\/p>\n

Yellowstone National Park guests are urged to keep a distance of 75 feet from animals such as bison.<\/p>\n

Bison can run three times faster than humans, the National Park Service warns.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n
