{"id":775965,"date":"2026-07-21T14:16:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-21T14:16:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/775965\/"},"modified":"2026-07-21T14:16:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T14:16:11","slug":"charlie-woods-records-personal-best-first-round-at-u-s-junior-still-in-hunt-for-match-play","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/775965\/","title":{"rendered":"Charlie Woods records personal-best first round at U.S. Junior, still in hunt for match play"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Charlie Woods overcame a rocky start to keep his match-play chances alive at the <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/championships.usga.org\/usjunioramateur\/2026\/scoring.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">U.S. Junior Amateur.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The 17-year-old Woods, among the 264 competitors vying for the trophy now named after his dad, Tiger Woods, started his third straight appearance in this championship bogey-triple and sat 6 over through five holes on Saucon Valley\u2019s Old Course.<\/p>\n<p>But Woods fought back by playing the final 13 holes in 1 under with a pair of birdies to card an opening, 5-over 76, his best first round at the U.S. Junior by five shots.<\/p>\n<p>Woods opened in 82 two years ago at Oakland Hills while he posted a first-round 81 last year at Trinity Forest. He followed those rounds with an 80 and 74, respectively, missing match play by a substantial margin on both occasions. This time, however, Woods heads to Saucon Valley\u2019s Grace Course, which played about three-fourths of a shot tougher in Round 1, for Tuesday\u2019s second round, sitting just three shots out of what would currently be a playoff for the final berths into Wednesday\u2019s Round of 64.<\/p>\n<p>Sohan Patel fired a 66 on the Old to take the first-round lead at 5 under, a shot clear of Brayden Jones, whose 66 came on the par-70 Grace.<\/p>\n<p>Woods\u2019 future Florida State teammate, seventh-ranked amateur Miles Russell, posted 69 on the Grace. Other notable rounds included Tyler Mawhinney (70-Grace), Jackson Ormond (73-Old), Jessy Huebner (72-Grace), Giuseppe Puebla (72-Grace), Oscar Couilleau (74-Old), Ronin Banerjee (73-Grace), Luke Ringkamp (74-Old), Tomas Restrepo (77-Old), Philip Dunham (77-Old) and defending champion Hamilton Coleman (76-Grace).<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"Link\" aria-label=\"U.S. Junior Amateur competitor disqualified for using green-reading materials\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golfchannel.com\/usga\/news\/u-s-junior-amateur-competitor-disqualified-for-using-green-reading-materials\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"2026 U.S. Junior Amateur\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1784643371_527_.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>James Nagle, a rising high-school senior from Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, incurred multiple breaches of Model Local Rule G-12 during his first-round, 6-over 76 on Saucon Valley\u2019s Grace Course.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Charlie Woods overcame a rocky start to keep his match-play chances alive at the U.S. Junior Amateur.
