Few horror movies are more frightening with their name alone than Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre<\/a>. Regardless of whether you’ve even seen the movie or not, words like “chain saw” and “massacre” immediately conjure images of gruesome and grisly carnage. Funny enough, those who have seen the movie know that there’s hardly any on-screen gore, but that doesn’t make the sick and sadistic actions of Leatherface and the rest of his family any less impactful. <\/p>\n

Over the years, many storytellers have all attempted to replicate the success of the classic from Hooper and co-writer Kim Henkel, though none have come close to recreating its impact. To date, the franchise has earned a total of nine installments, with the original entry earning sequels, prequels, reboots, and reboot prequels. Additionally, the concept was even expanded into a video game. Obsession director Curry Barker is currently attached to a new revival<\/a> of the concept, though that’s only one of the reimaginings on the way.<\/p>\n

Dark Sky Films confirms that a rotoscoped reimagining of the original 1974 movie is currently in production. While various filmmakers and studios are attempting to find ways to incorporate AI into their productions, Animation Director and Art Director Paul Beck is going an entirely different route. The process of rotoscoping means Beck and his team will be tracing each and every frame of the movie to create an animated reimagining based directly on the performances seen in the original movie.<\/p>\n

Beck shared in a statement, “The original Texas Chain Saw Massacre is a masterpiece that changed cinema forever … Our goal is to honor its legacy by reimagining it<\/a> through the timeless art of hand-drawn rotoscoping, giving audiences a completely new way to experience a film they thought they already knew.”<\/p>\n

Other examples of rotoscoped films include Disney’s Cinderella and Snow White, as well as movies like The Lord of the Rings, Heavy Metal, and Fire and Ice. More recently, we’ve seen rotoscoped movies like Richard Linklater’s Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly, on which Beck served as a lead animator.<\/p>\n

The project will spark speculation in audiences<\/a>, understandably, given how troubled the overall franchise has been over the past 50 years. The initial sequels earned varying levels of success, though they leaned a bit more into the absurdity of the premise than the original. In 2003, Michael Bay produced a remake starring Jessica Biel, which arguably kicked off the 2000s trend of rebooting every classic horror movie imaginable. That reboot earned a prequel, with the series then jumping to a direct sequel with 2013’s Texas Chainsaw 3D. Then came an attempt at a direct prequel with 2017’s Leatherface, only to then lead to Netflix’s 2022 Texas Chainsaw Massacre, another direct sequel to the original installment.<\/p>\n

This new take on the movie is expected to land in theaters in 2027.
