This isn’t the first round of layoffs at ESPN — or for any company. Frankly, this is at least the third or fourth round of layoffs at ESPN since I started working at OutKick four years ago. It’s become a yearly story at this point.

EXCLUSIVE: ESPN TO PART WAYS WITH CAM NEWTON AS PART OF TALENT LAYOFFS THAT ALSO INCLUDED RYAN CLARK

Anyway, something else that’s become a yearly topic is why ESPN is letting folks go, with several people placing the blame on Pat McAfee. That’s right. Pat McAfee!

Pat McAfee appears on the College GameDay show before a game between the Tennessee Volunteers and the Georgia Bulldogs at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn., on Sept. 13, 2025. (ISI Photos via Getty Images)

He earns roughly $30 million a year, and is reportedly in negotiations with ESPN to double that moving forward. Obviously, those numbers are going to raise some eyebrows when these layoffs happen.

NFL Hall of Famer JJ Watt joined the “progrum” on Tuesday, and … didn’t shy away from the elephant in the room:

The Pat McAfee decision is an easy one

“Slow, slow news day over there on the ESPN airwaves, huh?” Watt said to begin the interview. “I mean, besides the fact that you’re getting $100 million… Did they keep anybody? Or is everybody fired to pay you? I’m trying to figure that out.”

Goodness gracious. Just a vicious way to start an interview. Brutal stuff.

Look, it was obviously in jest, and McAfee responded by laughing it off. He’s not stupid. He’s not immune to the narrative on social media right now.

“We do not appreciate that,” he said. “That is the narrative, and I’m certainly taking it on the shins. The boys and I are very proud of the work that we have done. Thanks.”

American sports analyst Pat McAfee looks on during the 2026 Home Run Derby at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pa., on July 13, 2026. (Getty Images)

Here’s the bottom line: ESPN views Pat McAfee as an asset. The network has put him everywhere since the two partnered up a few years back.

He’s on College GameDay. He’s on the sidelines for the biggest college football games, sometimes even getting his own simulcast feed. His show is on the main channel every day. He travels to big sporting events outside of football for his show.

Just last week, he was at the Home Run Derby, which was notable given it was the first year it wasn’t on ESPN in decades.

It’s clear that ESPN believes in McAfee and wants to continue to invest in him. It’s probably not a bad investment to make given he’s arguably the biggest all-around sports personality in the media.

He’s also self-made. ESPN did not create Pat McAfee. ESPN invested in McAfee — and his team — years ago. Since he joined College GameDay in 2022, ratings have gone up. It’s not all because of McAfee, of course, but that’s not a coincidence.

“The first time we licensed the show through ESPN, one of these happened, we got blamed,” McAfee said later in the interview. “This time, we’re getting blamed as well. Which I guess I can understand, but I mean, there’s billions and billions of dollars in these companies, and hard decisions have to get made.

“And we don’t like any of them, and we hope we’re an asset to the company going forward.”

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell talks with Pat McAfee on stage during Round Two of the 2026 NFL Draft at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pa., on April 24, 2026. (Getty Images)

And that’s what McAfee is to ESPN — an asset. A big one. He’s proven that, time and time again, since joining the network. Think about all the big interviews you see out of the World Wide Leader right now … where do they come from?

The Pat McAfee show. Not First Take. Not NFL Live. Not SportsCenter.

McAfee’s radio show.

Think of all the viral moments we see every Saturday during the fall. Where do they come from?

McAfee’s kicking segment during College GameDay. Or McAfee’s outlandish intro during the opening scene.

Like it or hate it — and I know plenty of folks hate it — it’s clearly working.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

SIGN UP TO GET THE LATEST SPORTS NEWS

Pat McAfee didn’t cost Ryan Clark his job.
