Did you ever watch Barney back in the day and fear that somewhere beneath the “I love you, you love me” sing-song bravado and big hugs, deep in that purple dinosaur’s cold, unblinking eyes, there could be something more sinister afoot? Well, firstly, Barney was and forever will be a total sweetheart, you monster! But also second, Buddy \u2014 the nightmarish new horror from Too Many Cooks creator Casper Kelly \u2014 may just be the cinematic vindication you crave. Prepare to meet the titular Buddy, a bright orange unicorn from a forgotten, fictitious 90s kids’ TV show whose cheery look belies an altogether more sinister nature… check out the teaser trailer below;<\/p>\n
Creepy laugh? Check! Static-fuzz, grainy Backrooms<\/a> style presentation? Check! A broom dropped in rage, a bunch of scared-looking kids, and is that a unicorn horn covered in blood? Triple check! Okay, okay, okay, we may have literally seen about 50 seconds of pure vibes footage from Buddy here, but that’s plenty enough to have us both intrigued and mildly terrified of what Kelly has been cooking. The edutainment series sets are eerily on-point, the glimpses of strange dolls and blood-spatter are super creepy, and the lack of context for the chaos that’s clearly about to erupt only adds to the whole thing’s malevolent aura. And for anyone who saw Casper Kelly’s aforementioned 2014 Adult Swim short Too Many Cooks \u2014 which concealed a killer within its genre-boundary-blurring aping of 70s, 80s, and 90s TV show opening credits sequences \u2014 this looks very much of an effed-up piece with its short-form predecessor.<\/p>\n The official synopsis for Buddy reads: “Inside the colorful world of “It’s Buddy!”, a group of children spend their days singing, dancing, and helping Buddy spread happiness. But when one child refuses to play along, Buddy is not pleased and cracks begin to appear in this seemingly perfect world.” Along for the ride are stars Cristin Milioti as a suburban mother who finds herself drawn into Buddy\u2019s nightmare world; Delaney Quinn as a courageous kid who resists Buddy’s reign of terror; Keegan-Michael Key as Buddy himself; and the likes of Topher Grace, Michael Shannon, and Patton Oswalt, too.<\/p>\n With stock in original, internet culture steeped horror movies<\/a> at an all-time high just now thanks to the likes of Talk To Me<\/a>, Backrooms, Iron Lung<\/a>, Obsession<\/a>, and more, Buddy may have a friend in the box office when it hits cinemas stateside on 28 August \u2014 and screens here hopefully soon after. Until we have an official UK release date though, enjoy your newest sleep paralysis demon.
