Bryson DeChambeau is friends with Ryder Cup teammate Scottie Scheffler. Despite being adversaries during that biennial competition, Scheffler has a plenty cordial relationship with Rory McIlroy. <\/p>\n

But DeChambeau and McIlroy can\u2019t seem to play nice \u2014 or perhaps to be fair, McIlroy is \u201cnot particularly fond\u201d<\/a> of his 2025 Masters final-pairing partner. McIlroy made that clear after DeChambeau\u2019s reaction to a two-stroke penalty at the 154th Open Championship<\/a> last weekend. <\/p>\n

Scheffler was asked about off-field drama driving interest to other sports and whether he perceived the personal jabs that McIlroy levied at DeChambeau to be good for golf.<\/p>\n

\u201cGolf\u2019s different in a sense of a lot of other sports because my biggest rival week in and week out is the golf course that we\u2019re playing,\u201d Scheffler told reporters ahead of the 3M Open outside of Minneapolis<\/a> on Wednesday. <\/p>\n

\u201cI could never stop somebody from doing anything in golf,\u201d Scheffler explained. \u201cI felt like when I played basketball, there would always be rivalries because you\u2019re going to play defense against a person and that is much more personal in a sense like because I\u2019m actively trying to stop \u2014 like if you and I were going to go out and play one-on-one, like it would turn into a rivalry because I\u2019m actively trying to stop what you\u2019re doing, but in golf, we\u2019re always competing against ourselves on the golf course.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scottie Scheffler is the most expensive he\u2019s been in his career to finish in the top 10 this week, and that\u2019s understandable. The world\u2019s top-ranked player has 10 finishes inside the top 5 this year. Here\u2019s how much of a favorite he is to win in Minnesota.<\/p>\n

The world\u2019s top-ranked player emphasized that he has never been a big fan of personal jabs. Throughout his comments, he never named DeChambeau<\/a> or McIlroy specifically. <\/p>\n

When asked for his thoughts on the penalty after his final round at Royal Birkdale<\/a>, Scheffler did come to the defense of DeChambeau.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think maybe we need to be a little bit more strict in the way that we are policing guys, but it\u2019s a little bit of a balance because you\u2019ve got certain guys like a Bryson who every shot he hits is going to be shown on TV,\u201d Scheffler said at The Open. \u201cWhen you have camera angles that are far away, things can look different than they do when you\u2019re right there.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve done a good job of \u2014 I don\u2019t know, I hate saying stuff out here because I don\u2019t want anything to get taken out of context. All I\u2019ll say is Bryson, I\u2019ve known him for a long time, and he\u2019s a lot of things, but he\u2019s definitely not a cheater. I\u2019ve never seen him cheat once, whether we were having a putting contest on the putting green or chipping contest, or anytime we played amateur golf, I never saw anything suspicious. When you\u2019re watching him there from that camera angle, maybe he was a touch careless around his ball, but I don\u2019t think he did anything intentionally.\u201d<\/p>\n
