{"id":78010,"date":"2025-08-12T20:48:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T20:48:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/78010\/"},"modified":"2025-08-12T20:48:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T20:48:08","slug":"quantum-computing-supply-chain-hub-envisioned-for-springfield-technical-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/78010\/","title":{"rendered":"Quantum computing supply chain hub envisioned for Springfield Technical Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZKYVTLNK2VAHBPKCOGGZLFZGHU\">SPRINGFIELD \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/westernmass\/2024\/10\/another-revolution-about-to-start-with-16m-quantum-computing-project-in-mass.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Quantum<\/a> computing exists on the frontiers of physics, exploiting how matter and light behave at the subatomic level, tackling problems no one thought unsolvable and doing it faster than imagined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XFNCF4WA5FDPNOFVZJYZW6OCR4\">\u201cBut people don\u2019t realize it\u2019s still a physical thing,\u201d said Nathan Gemelke, co-founder and chief technology strategist of QuEra Computing. \u201cIt\u2019s a piece of metal with screws. People have to build it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IBV44HPOLJFFFGYAF4E2RX7BFQ\">And a group of Pioneer Valley boosters, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/topic\/stcc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Springfield Technical Community College<\/a> and the Western Massachusetts Economic Development Council, want people to build the quantum equipment, to repair it, learn to operate and maintain it in what\u2019s now an empty 16,000-square-foot warehouse in the Springfield Technical Park on State and Federal streets, next to STCC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EH5USWLLRJF7JE4FNJWOHIQ7ZQ\">They hosted Lt. Gov. (Jim Kinney \/ The Republican)The Republican<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EMR34EU3HFHNNCOH547RS3JQTY\">\u201cQuantum computing is going from being a bench science,\u201d said Pat Larkin, director of the Innovation Institute at MassTech, one of the partners in the effort to create a Quantum Supply Chain Accelerator at the Springfield Technology Park. \u201cIt\u2019s rapidly becoming a commercial product. And what better place to develop it as a commercial product than here in this region that has so much manufacturing history?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2QO3VKXC3FGNDN2CYBJLBI6B34\">Larkin said the differences between quantum and classical computing were vast, like comparing a basic Google search to an artificial intelligence deep dive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CBNUXXZTXNAPHBNEKLMYLG7MA4\">State Sen. Jacob R. Oliveira said he and his fellow lawmakers might be still learning the technical aspects of quantum computing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"I67CC5CISRCOLAV2MCQHYYOASQ\">\u201cBut we know it creates certain things. (Jim Kinney \/ The Republican)The Republican<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PLWCMWHAYFEBFNBLF2TQ6TGKQ4\">The EDC pitched a quantum computing concept to the Biden administration in 2023, when the federal government solicited ideas for regional tech hub funding. The quantum plans here didn\u2019t make the <a href=\"https:\/\/bidenwhitehouse.archives.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2023\/10\/23\/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-31-regional-tech-hubs-to-spur-american-innovation-strengthen-manufacturing-and-create-good-paying-jobs-in-every-region-of-the-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cut as one of 31 hubs<\/a> nationwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AICR6V6CHRBAPDSJAXN6CIXJPU\">But work continued, and in November 2024, Biden authorized $40 million to boost quantum computing in the economic development bond bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TFBNN2QGDVC25KGAUVUNXGNYXY\">The Massachusetts Green <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/topic\/high-performance-computing-center\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">High Performance Computing Center<\/a> in Holyoke and its Boston-based partner, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quera.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">QuEra <\/a>Computing, plan to build a $16 million quantum computing complex within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/topic\/holyoke\/posts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Holyoke<\/a> center over the next two years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HALRA6EOCFD6FGXPNZUWKUP25Q\">Driscoll visited the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/topic\/high-performance-computing-center\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">center<\/a> and the Berkshire Innovation Center, as well, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7MV7D57YJVANHDZW3S7LJKZWHI\">\u201cThere\u2019s a team effort here along with the city, that we think is really important, to invest in new technology that can produce jobs and help support our innovation economy,\u201d Driscoll said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EVHWIIGDYNEV5ENRK3RC7X7OEY\">There isn\u2019t, as of now, a dollar amount projected for what the accelerator might cost, said John B. Cook, president of Springfield Technical Community College.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PSEOQGRD3JCJZH4GTZL7XLAFHY\">The college already has programs in place to build the workforce for quantum computing.
