That collaborative approach extended beyond the cast and into every part of the production.

“The way I overcame the challenge, first of all, with the cast was I tapped into my community, Sal Romeo. And thank you for your kind words, but Sal taught me everything I know,” Kang said. “He taught me that it’s always a collaboration. It is always an ensemble, and you have to have fun. It’s called a play for a reason, right? So he gave me the foundation of the joy and the honor to be an actor and to work with an amazing ensemble.”

“Then it carried over to even financing the movie. We tried the traditional route, and a lot of people didn’t understand what I was trying to make because this film is a love letter to the car community,” Kang continued. “The car community, operative being ‘community,’ has always been there for me since I was a little kid. Once I started my career, the Fast and Furious audience is the car community. They are there in my darkest hour. They don’t care what I look like, what my ideology is, as long as we share this passion. We are a community.”

Kang revealed that the film’s cars, drivers, locations and financing all came through that network, with the production avoiding computer-generated driving sequences entirely.

“And so I could not have completed this movie or even started this movie without the car community,” he said. “Every dollar of the financing, all the cars, the location, the drivers. We don’t have any CGI or visual effects driving. It’s all practical. Drivers from all over the world brought their cars. They built cars for me.”

The community’s support became particularly visible during the film’s finale, which was shot at the birthplace of drifting in Englishtown.

“The finale of the movie takes place at the birthplace of drifting in Englishtown. That track was donated to me by the owners of the track, that family. Twelve thousand people came to support us. We put the bat signal out and said, ‘We’re making a movie about the car community. If you guys want to come support us for the weekend, we’d appreciate it.’”

Kang went on to say, “That’s stuff that we just don’t have the resources to pay for, and 12,000 people came, and they’re in the audience with us, and they’re going through this emotional journey of the characters with us,” he added. “So, it really was community, from the actors to everything in the film. So all the action pieces, all the set pieces that you would have to have a studio to back you. So, that was the only way.”

Kang said the experience also deepened his understanding of the emotional connection between the franchise, its stars and its audience, particularly following the death of Paul Walker. “I didn’t truly understand how connected we were emotionally,” he said. “The Fast and Furious film, at first, to me, was a great opportunity to be part of this big franchise. But once we lost Paul, people went on this emotional journey with us.
