{"id":781498,"date":"2026-07-24T08:55:28","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T08:55:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/781498\/"},"modified":"2026-07-24T08:55:28","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T08:55:28","slug":"international-dark-sky-discovery-center-announces-targeted-opening-date","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/781498\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;International Dark Sky Discovery Center&#8217; announces targeted opening date"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FOUNTAIN HILLS, AZ \u2014 The International Dark Sky Discovery Center (IDSDC) in Fountain Hills is currently in its final phase of construction, approaching completion <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4GugAYE3S5A\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">after several years<\/a> of development.<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1784883327_492_.jpeg\" alt=\"International Dark Sky Discovery Center to debut in 2027. \"  width=\"1280\" height=\"720\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Split Rock Studios | International Dark Sky Discovery Center<\/p>\n<p>        International Dark Sky Discovery Center to debut in 2027.<\/p>\n<p>The over 20,000-square-foot, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc15.com\/news\/local-news\/groundbreaking-for-dark-sky-center-in-fountain-hills-set-for-same-day-as-total-eclipse\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">science-based facility<\/a> will feature numerous interactive learning experiences.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc15.com\/entertainment\/events\/phase-one-of-the-international-dark-sky-discovery-center-to-open-later-this-year\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RELATED: A look at what &#8216;Phase one&#8217; of the \u2018International Dark Sky Discovery Center\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to the president of the board for the center, establishing the facility in Fountain Hills was ideal, as the location perfectly suits the center\u2019s needs.<br \/>\u201cWe\u2019re kind of on the leading edge of a global movement to preserve the dark skies, and that&#8217;s what got us started in this whole process, which we started actually 12 years ago,\u201d said Bill to ABC15. \u201cIt took us three years to get Fountain Hills designated as the 17th International Dark Sky Community in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The purpose and mission of the center encompass both STEM science and raising awareness about the significance of protecting dark skies.<\/p>\n<p>Bill emphasized the importance of this effort, highlighting that it is crucial not only for the health of nocturnal animals and humans but also for advancing astronomical research. In an interview with ABC15\u2019s Nicole Gutierrez, he added, \u201cIt\u2019s a billion-dollar industry that we definitely want to preserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joe Bill, president of the board for the International Dark Sky Discovery Center shared with ABC15 some of the main components of the science-focused facility.<\/p>\n<p>First is the Dark Sky Observatory, which will feature the largest telescope in the Greater Phoenix area, serving both research purposes and public viewing events.<br \/>The center promises to have a state-of-the-art planetarium with a tilted dome and a variety of shows that cover topics beyond space, such as nocturnal animals.<br \/>An inspiration theater equipped with a 27.5-foot-wide, 15-foot-high LED screen that will provide immersive visual experiences.<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1784883328_629_.png\" alt=\"Rendering of Night Sky Exhibit Hall to open at International Dark Sky Discovery Center. \"  width=\"1280\" height=\"741\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Split Rock Studios, [International Dark Sky Discovery Center]<\/p>\n<p>        Rendering of Night Sky Exhibit Hall to open at International Dark Sky Discovery Center.<\/p>\n<p>The center will also feature an exhibit hall with over 60 exhibits, many of which are said to be interactive.<br \/>Classrooms under the \u2018Einstein Exploration Center\u2019 area, dedicated to hands-on teaching of physics, light, and other subjects.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors can expect a diverse and engaging educational experience when they visit, with a prominent feature being its designation as the home of \u201cthe largest telescope in the Greater Phoenix area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the highest level of technology. It can be run remotely. It has very easy-to-use software. So, if you had a family that said, \u2018I really want to see this,\u2019 you can click on the screen and go to Jupiter or Saturn, and if they&#8217;re available, it&#8217;ll just move right there and go right to it.
