Cara Dune is the focus of this week’s Star Wars Character Spotlight, the Alderaanian shock trooper from The Mandalorian played by Gina Carano.

Cara (short for Carasynthia) Dune fought for the Rebel Alliance after the destruction of her homeworld but went freelance after the Battle of Endor, harboring a deep hatred for the Empire. Her weapon of choice was a chaingun, which was excellent for ripping through large groups of enemies. The character hasn’t appeared since The Mandalorian Season 2; she was supposed to play a much bigger part in the Mandoverse, until Gina Carano was sacked by Disney for making some deeply controversial posts on social media.

We don’t know an awful lot about Cara Dune before she appears in The Mandalorian, other than that she served as a shock trooper for the Rebel Alliance after the destruction of Alderaan, her homeworld. After the Battle of Endor, she happily spent time hunting down the remaining Imperial officers until there were none at large.

Then, work for the New Republic involved either escorting important figures or suppressing riots, neither of which she was comfortable doing. She decided to leave the New Republic and work as a mercenary instead, out in the Outer Rim where the New Republic had less influence.

Meeting The Mandalorian and Grogu

"Cara

By 9 ABY, Cara Dune settled on the backwater forest world Sorgan, where she was content to live out an early retirement in a small village. It was here that the character made her debut in The Mandalorian Season 1, when Din Djarin arrived in her village. As she spotted him in the local cantina, she assumed he had come to collect a bounty on her and made her way outside, waiting to ambush him.

Din left the shack looking for her, suspecting that she was looking to collect a bounty on him and Grogu, and the two fought outside before eventually realizing that neither had intended to hunt the other. Once they realized they weren’t enemies, Cara told Din to leave the planet; she believed that two intimidating mercenaries in one place would attract too much attention.

Later that night, Din came to her with a proposal. He had taken a job to defend a remote fishing village from a group of raiders, but he couldn’t do it alone. He asked her to help him, pointing out that it would be easy for both of them to hide there, with food and board included. She took him up on his offer.

After getting settled in the village, the pair of them searched the nearby woods and found a band of Klatooinian raiders. The raiders had come into possession of an AT-ST, which they knew would be difficult to destroy. Returning to the settlement after blowing up the raiders’ supplies, they decided to train the locals in combat and teach them some simple rules of warfare. They laid a trap for the AT-ST, hoping it would fall into the river and enable them to finish off the raiders easily.

That night, the Klatooinians attacked. The AT-ST initially didn’t walk into their trap, so Cara lured it in by firing on it in the water herself. Once it was stuck, Din Djarin threw a thermal detonator through its viewport and killed the pilot. They made short work of the rest of the raiders.

Fighting Moff Gideon

"Cara

After the job, Cara Dune and Din spent the next few weeks at the fishing village, until a bounty hunter tracked down Grogu. He had his sights on Grogu, but Cara was alert and killed him before the hunter could get a shot away. Realizing they weren’t safe, Din said goodbye and left with Grogu. With the locals now safe, Cara returned to the larger village, spending her time partaking in wrestling contests.

She remained there until Din Djarin eventually returned, asking for her help in freeing Nevarro from the Imperial Remnant. He reasoned that Grogu wouldn’t be safe until the Imperials were killed and the bounty removed, and Dune would get the chance to kill Imperials again. Cara accepted his proposal and after picking up Kuiil and IG-11, they headed to the planet.

During the journey, Cara and Din competed in an arm wrestling contest, which Grogu mistakenly thought was an actual fight and began to Force choke Cara until Din intervened. When landing on Nevarro, they met up with Greef Karga and his men and journeyed to the Imperial-occupied town. Once they made it to the outskirts, Greef shot down his two men, revealing he had originally intended to betray Din and hand him over to the Empire, before Grogu had inspired a change of heart.

He suggested a new plan, where he and Cara pretended to have apprehended the Mandalorian and Grogu and march into town, handing them over to the Empire. Grogu’s pod was to be closed while Kuiil returned him to the Razor Crest. The plan appeared to be going well, but Moff Gideon had seen through it.

He fired on the town’s cantina while Cara, Din and Greef were inside and ordered his men to retrieve Grogu from the Razor Crest. The three of them fought back against the Imperials, but were pinned down until IG-11 arrived with Grogu, causing chaos in the street. Cara emerged from the cantina firing her chaingun, but they were all eventually forced back inside the cantina. They fled underground after IG-11 created an exit route.

IG-11 self-destructed to kill the stormtroopers waiting in ambush, while Din Djarin destroyed Moff Gideon’s TIE Fighter. The remaining Imperial presence was soon destroyed and Cara decided to stay on Nevarro, becoming the town’s new head of security while Greef Karga transformed the town into a legitimate trading port, free of Imperial influence.

Destroying the Imperial facility on Nevarro

"Cara

Cara Dune next appears halfway through Season 2 of The Mandalorian, when Din Djarin returned to Nevarro with Grogu looking to get his ship repaired. Cara and Greef took advantage of his return to ask for his help eliminating a nearby Imperial facility that they’d recently discovered. He accepted and the three of them stormed the facility.

After rigging the place to blow, they discovered that the facility had been working on cloning, using Grogu’s DNA, though they didn’t understand the end goal behind such efforts. They didn’t worry too much about it, with the Imperial presence on Nevarro officially eliminated.

Shortly after Din left the planet, Carson Teva arrived asking for his whereabouts. Upon realizing that Cara Dune was a former Rebel Alliance shock trooper, he offered her a place in the New Republic. Cara initially declined, though the opportunity to hunt down more Imperial warlords was tempting and she became a ranger of the New Republic.

Rescuing Grogu

"The

Cara appeared a couple of episodes later, when Din returned to Nevarro asking for her help in rescuing Grogu from Moff Gideon. She didn’t hesitate to accept. First they needed to find Gideon’s current location, so she expedited Migs Mayfeld’s release from a New Republic prison camp using her new credentials.

Teaming up with Boba Fett and Fennec Shand, they brought Mayfeld to an Imperial mining facility on Morak. While Din and Mayfeld infiltrated the facility undercover, Cara and Fennec took up sniping positions to aid their escape. Inevitably, Din and Mayfeld were exposed and had to flee the facility. Cara provided covering fire while Fett extracted them in Slave I.

Din and Mayfeld got the intel they were looking for, so after they dropped the latter back at the New Republic prison camp, they teamed up with Mandalorians Bo-Katan and Koska Reeves to attack Gideon’s light cruiser. After commandeering a shuttle, they forced their way into the shuttle bay (pretending they were under attack from Slave I) and fought their way to the bridge, while Din split off to rescue Grogu.

Cara and the others took the bridge with ease, but once Din returned with a beaten Moff Gideon, they found themselves pinned inside as his Dark Troopers attempted to beat through the bridge’s blast doors. Cara prepared for a fight, but they were saved by Luke Skywalker, who had arrived intending to take Grogu as his first youngling student for Jedi training.

Luke departed with Grogu and everyone went their separate ways, with Cara presumably returning to Nevarro for a time.

What next?

Cara Dune has never appeared in a Star Wars story since The Mandalorian Season 2 finale. She was supposed to star in her own Disney Plus series Rangers of the New Republic, but that was seemingly canceled after Gina Carano posted some controversial statements on social media about the holocaust, while also mocking trans people and their pronouns.

Disney subsequently sacked her, though the actress did eventually reach a settlement agreement with the company in 2025. In April 2026, she claimed to have spoken to both Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau about reprising the role of Cara Dune in a future Star Wars project, though it is unclear if that will ever happen for multiple reasons.

The only story mention of Cara Dune since has come in The Mandalorian Season 3, when Greef Karga briefly mentioned that she’d been whisked away by the New Republic to do some mysterious special forces work. The character is still alive and could potentially reappear down the line, but that seems largely down to whether or not Filoni, Favreau and Disney are willing to overlook Carano’s past misdeeds and risk potential controversy in casting her again. That would be a risk, and it may not be one they’re willing to take.

Thanks to Wookieepedia, without whom I’d not have realized that the character’s full name is Carasynthia Dune.
