She highlighted how the museum\u2019s displays include \u201cthe desk on which Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence … Abraham Lincoln\u2019s top hat from the night he was assassinated, the Greensboro lunch counter, the gowns of the first ladies\u201d and more.<\/p>\n
In Tuesday\u2019s hearing, Republican congressman Tim Burchett said he felt the Smithsonian has \u201cbecome infected by a woke ideology\u201d to highlight American oppression.<\/p>\n
Democrat Melanie Stansbury denounced that view, criticising the Trump administration\u2019s broad crackdown on cultural and academic centres.<\/p>\n
