Corey Ruiz’s family speaks publicly for the first time<\/p>\n

MADISON (WKOW) \u2014 The family of Corey Ruiz spoke publicly for the first time since he was shot and killed by a Madison police officer Wednesday afternoon at a busy intersection on the city’s near-east side.<\/p>\n
Ruiz’s mother, Elsa Ruiz, and his daughter, Kah’liyah Ruiz, were visibly emotional when talking about him on Friday. Several family members, along with civil rights attorney Ben Crump and state Rep. Shelia Stubbs, D-Madison, spoke at the news conference.<\/p>\n
“My son was an exceptional guy, he was my love,” Elsa Ruiz said. “He loved his daughter. He loved his family. He did not deserve to be taken out like that.”<\/p>\n
Kah’liyah Ruiz described the moment she learned of her father’s death.<\/p>\n
“When she told me he had been shot and dead and killed, I started crying,” she said. “I didn’t even know what to say, I didn’t know what to do. My heart was just so broken, and it just hurts so much knowing I can’t see my father anymore.”<\/p>\n
The family described Ruiz as kind, funny and someone who loved music, his daughter and his family. They criticized what they say was a lack of de-escalation and questioned why he was shot.<\/p>\n
“We saw an execution, and it shocked our conscience,” Crump said. “People all over Wisconsin were shocked when they saw the execution of Corey Ruiz. People all over America are shocked when they see the execution of Corey Ruiz, because they understand when they see that video that it was so unnecessary to execute him.”<\/p>\n
“Thank God there was video,” Crump said. “If there wasn’t video, we can only imagine what the narrative would have been.”<\/p>\n
Police say Ruiz produced a fixed-blade knife that injured an officer during a struggle. Bystander video appears to show Ruiz going to the ground during a struggle. Soon after, three gunshots are heard on the video as an officer points his gun from a standing position.<\/p>\n
Ruiz’s family and Crump are calling for body cameras to be installed on Madison police officers and justice for Corey.
