making headlines for causing “explosive diarrhea”<\/a> are spiking in the Kansas City metro area, recent data shows. <\/p>\nAccording to new data from both sides of the state line, confirmed cases of Cyclosporiasis, caused by the Cyclospora parasite, are rising.<\/p>\n
In Johnson County, Kansas, confirmed cases have risen from 25 last week to 95 this week, with the entire state of Kansas reporting 289 cases.<\/p>\n
Missouri Cyclosporiasis data is harder to come by. The state reported a total of 216 cases so far this year, but doesn’t list county-by-county data.<\/p>\n
KMBC 9 News reached out to local health departments and learned Kansas City, Missouri, has confirmed 100 cases of Cyclosporiasis. Eastern Jackson County, which doesn’t include Kansas City or Independence has confirmed 80 cases so far this year.<\/p>\n
County health spokesperson Matt Evans says 78 of those 80 cases have been reported in the past 11 days. The county typically averages five cases per year. <\/p>\n
The most notable symptom of Cyclosporiasis is frequent, watery diarrhea \u2014 it’s different from the occasional diarrhea many of us see, and experts say it should be taken seriously.<\/p>\n
In addition to diarrhea, those with Cyclosporiasis could experience stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, a low-grade fever, loss of appetite, tiredness and dehydration. <\/p>\n

Experts say to always wash any fruits or vegetables before eating, but the best way to kill the parasite is to cook the produce. Cooking to 158 degrees will kill the Cyclospora parasite.<\/p>\n

At-home treatment may not always kill the parasite, and healthcare providers may prefer to prescribe antibiotics.<\/p>\n
