Here are a few crossover hits that experimented and showed what it meant to have a pop hit back in the day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeartbreak Hotel\u201d by Elvis Presley<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPlay video<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1785095829_400_hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Play\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Released as a single in January of 1957, <a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/4-elvis-presley-songs-that-most-people-have-forgotten-about\/\" id=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/4-elvis-presley-songs-that-most-people-have-forgotten-about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Elvis Presley<\/a>\u2018s \u201cHeartbreak Hotel\u201d brought rock \u2018n\u2019 roll to a mainstream American audience. In addition to that, this song established him as a superstar. \u201cHeartbreak Hotel\u201d became a major crossover hit, dominating both pop and country charts, as well as other genres, like rhythm and blues and western.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tVideos by American Songwriter\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was like something from Mars,\u201d Elton John said of this song, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/elvis-presley\/heartbreak-hotel\" id=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/elvis-presley\/heartbreak-hotel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Songfacts<\/a>. \u201cIt changed the world, socially and musically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, this one was inspired by the suicide of a man who appeared in a 1955 newspaper. Tommy Durden and Mae Boren Axton wrote \u201cHeartbreak Hotel\u201d and also gave Presley credit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI Walk The Line\u201d by Johnny Cash<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPlay video<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1785095829_3_hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Play\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This one originally went No. 1 on the Billboard country chart and then eventually crossed over onto the pop charts, where it became a Top 20 hit on what would later be the Billboard Hot 100. \u201cI Walk The Line\u201d was written while Cash was touring with Presley in the early days of his career. Cash was married and had a daughter at the time. He wrote this song about not giving in to temptation while on the road.<\/p>\n<p>He sings, \u201cI keep a close watch on this heart of mine \/ I keep my eyes wide open all the time \/ I keep the ends out for the tie that binds \/ Because you\u2019re mine, I walk the line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll I Have To Do Is Dream\u201d by The Everly Brothers<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPlay video<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1785095830_350_hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Play\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This song not only dominated multiple genres, but it also went No. 1 on all the Billboard singles charts at once. Written by songwriting duo Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, this song is about longing for someone but realizing you can have them if you just use your imagination.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cI remember hearing \u2018All I Have To Do Is Dream\u2019 on an acetate with Boudleaux\u2019s version on it, and I said, at the time, they could have put Boudleaux\u2019s out, and it would have been a hit,\u201d Phil Everly once said, per The Everly Brothers\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/dev-www.songfacts.com\/facts\/the-everly-brothers\/all-i-have-to-do-is-dream\" id=\"https:\/\/dev-www.songfacts.com\/facts\/the-everly-brothers\/all-i-have-to-do-is-dream\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">website<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s just a great, great song. It\u2019s beautiful.
