Dhani Harrison<\/a>\u00a0and longtime\u00a0Radiohead<\/a>\u00a0producer\u00a0Nigel Godrich<\/a>\u00a0have formed the new band Dragonflies and shared\u00a0debut\u00a0single \u2018Slower\u2019 \u2013\u00a0check\u00a0it out below.<\/p>\n

The pair will release their self-titled debut album on September 18 via Dark Horse Records\/BMG, the label originally founded by Harrison\u2019s father,\u00a0Beatles<\/a>\u00a0legend\u00a0George Harrison<\/a>, in 1974.\u00a0Pre-order it\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u2018Slower\u2019 serves as the record\u2019s opening track and combines tape loops, layered percussion and Harrison\u2019s vocals with a hazy, trip-hop-influenced sound.<\/p>\n

It arrives alongside a hand-drawn, psychedelic video directed by Bristol animator RUFFMERCY, whose previous credits include work with Nirvana<\/a>,\u00a0Earl Sweatshirt<\/a>,\u00a0The Chemical Brothers<\/a>,\u00a0Nas<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Run The Jewels<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Harrison and\u00a0Godrich\u00a0are longtime\u00a0friends, but\u00a0began working together after the former contacted the producer during the pandemic for advice on what would eventually become his 2023 solo album \u2018Innerstanding\u2019.<\/p>\n

Godrich later invited Harrison to his studio in Brixton, where they began constructing new songs from tape loops and working quickly without a fixed plan.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like one person throwing something in the air and the other person catching it,\u201d Godrich said of their creative process.<\/p>\n

Harrison added: \u201cHe\u2019s\u00a0a machine. He has strong opinions about what he wants to hear, and for me\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0very humbling.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0why\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0such a new experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

The project saw Harrison step back from the detailed computer-based production of his solo work to concentrate primarily on singing and playing guitar, while Godrich shaped the songs in real time.<\/p>\n

The pair have cited\u00a0Portishead\u00a0<\/a>singer\u00a0Beth Gibbons<\/a>, Japan\u00a0frontman\u00a0David\u00a0Sylvian\u00a0and late composer Ryuichi Sakamoto as influences on the album, describing its sound as a form of \u201cearthbound space rock\u201d.<\/p>\n

Godrich is best known for his long-running creative partnership with Radiohead, having produced every one of the band\u2019s studio albums since 1997\u2019s \u2018OK Computer\u2019, as well as working extensively with\u00a0Thom Yorke\u00a0<\/a>on his solo material and with\u00a0The Smile<\/a>.<\/p>\n

His production catalogue also includes\u00a0Beck<\/a>\u2019s \u2018Sea Change\u2019 and \u2018The Information\u2019,\u00a0Paul McCartney<\/a>\u2019s \u2018Chaos\u00a0And\u00a0Creation\u00a0In\u00a0The\u00a0Backyard\u2019,\u00a0Arcade Fire<\/a>\u2019s \u2018We Exist\u2019 and albums by artists including\u00a0IDLES<\/a>,\u00a0Air<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Charlotte Gainsbourg<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Alongside his production career,\u00a0Godrich\u00a0is a musician in his own right. He formed the electronic group\u00a0Ultra\u00edsta<\/a>\u00a0with singer Laura Bettinson and drummer Joey Waronker, releasing their self-titled debut in 2012 and follow-up \u2018Sister\u2019 in 2020.<\/p>\n

He is also a founding member of\u00a0Atoms For Peace\u00a0<\/a>alongside Yorke, Waronker,\u00a0Flea\u00a0<\/a>and Mauro\u00a0Refosco. The supergroup released its debut album \u2018Amok\u2019 in 2013, with Godrich contributing keyboards,\u00a0synthesisers\u00a0and guitar as well as production.<\/p>\n

Speaking to\u00a0NME\u00a0around the release of\u00a0Ultra\u00edsta\u2019s\u00a0second album, Godrich described making his own\u00a0music as\u00a0distinct from his better-known production work.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re producing, you\u2019re trying to help somebody else\u00a0realise\u00a0their vision,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen you\u2019re making your own record, you\u2019re responsible for every decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harrison, the only child of George and Olivia Harrison, first\u00a0emerged\u00a0as a member of the alternative rock band thenewno2, before forming the supergroup Fistful\u00a0Of\u00a0Mercy with\u00a0Ben Harper<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Joseph Arthur<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He released his first solo album, \u2018In\/\/\/Parallel\u2019, in 2017, followed by \u2018Innerstanding\u2019 six years later, and has also composed music for film and television projects including Beautiful Creatures,\u00a0Good Girls Revolt\u00a0and\u00a0Dogs.<\/p>\n
