This is our sixth annual Goddess Walk,” Reed said. “A part of this walk is just getting everybody outside in nature so that we can clear our minds.”

For Reed, the event is rooted in personal experience.

“This is one of the ways that I was able to help when I was going through mental conditions myself,” she said. “Being outside with nature, being in a community of like-minded people and grounding ourselves is one of the major ways that we can break the stigma.”

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, racial and ethnic minority communities often experience poorer mental health outcomes due to factors including barriers to quality care, stigma surrounding mental illness, discrimination and limited access to resources.

Kristin Arian, a registered nurse and longtime speaker at the event, said something as simple as taking a walk together can positively impact both physical and mental health.

“Really walking, just getting those endorphins flowing and what I like to call happy hormones, allows us to get together and release some of that tension,” Arian said.

She said community events like the Goddess Walk create safe spaces where people can support one another while reducing the stigma around seeking help.

“Mental health does not know a color, doesn’t know an income, doesn’t know a status,” Arian said. “Mental health is something that affects all of us.”

Attendee Tyler Hearn, owner of Freestyle Strands Beauty Utopia, said the walk served as a reminder to prioritize personal well-being before trying to care for everyone else.

“You can’t be OK with anything else or be of service to anybody else unless you’re OK here,” Hearn said, referring to mental wellness. “We have moments where we want to make sure mom’s good, dad’s good, work’s good, kids are good, but it’s like, are you good?”

She said even taking a brief pause can make a difference.

“You don’t realize by not taking a moment to take a deep breath,” Hearn said. “Just in those three seconds, what you were about to do would probably change because you thought about it. That’s a mental health check right there. Just breathe.”

Looking ahead, Reed hopes to expand I Am Goddess beyond annual events. She plans to launch a career readiness program for minority high school students, helping them prepare for careers in the workforce, skilled trades and entrepreneurship.

She says no matter how the organization grows, the mission remains the same: creating spaces where people feel supported, connected and empowered to care for their mental health.

For more information, visit the nonprofit’s website.

Sometimes, the first step toward better mental health is simply taking one.
