The Garmin Cirqa<\/a> was unveiled this week. It is yet another fitness tracker from a company that has made a huge number of them. <\/p>\n

This one is a little different, though. It\u2019s Garmin\u2019s first screen-free wearable in the style of a Whoop band or the Google Fitbit Air<\/a>. <\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t take much to get your head around the appeal of a fitness tracker that will not demand your attention throughout the day. But the Garmin Cirqa is more expensive than most at $199.99, and has a few ideas of its own.<\/p>\n

I touched on some of these in my recent Garmin Cirqa explainer<\/a>. But I also got to hear Garmin product manager Chrissy Wheeler address a few key questions about this new wearable at the device\u2019s launch. Here\u2019s what she said. <\/p>\n

1. Should you wear the Garmin Cirqa with a Garmin watch?<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no real benefit to wearing those together at the same time. If you started working out on your watch \u2014 within Garmin you can prioritize your primary wearable \u2014 it will take that as the primary activity. <\/p>\n

So, if I start on [the watch] and I let [Cirqa] auto activity detect, it will probably show this up as an \u201cauto\u201d activity, but I can then choose whether I want to save it or not. If I started an activity on [the watch] and I started an activity on [Cirqa], it would prioritize and only send through the one activity.<\/p>\n

2. Does the Garmin Cirqa have the latest heart rate reader hardware?<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think it\u2019s the very, very latest, but we\u2019ve added skin temp into it. And, really, the reason we didn\u2019t go for the very latest one is the size of the module. The size of the [latest] heart rate monitor is actually bigger, which would have made the device quite a lot bigger.<\/p>\n

3. Why does the Garmin Cirqa have a button when the competitor devices do not?<\/p>\n

They don\u2019t, and it comes down to Garmin\u2019s DNA. Like why would you wear a heart rate strap when you\u2019ve got wrist heart rate? It\u2019s about that giving the customer the ability to choose. <\/p>\n

If they really want to make sure that they\u2019re catching every single second of that activity, they\u2019ve got the option to start and stop the activity on the watch. If they’re not so worried and less bothered by that, they can just let the auto activity detect capture it.<\/p>\n

4. Does the Garmin Cirqa have a vibrate motor?<\/p>\n

There is a vibration motor. [Cirqa] has got a smart alarm, and it also if you start an activity, it buzzes every hour just in case you\u2019ve forgotten to turn [tracking] off. <\/p>\n

5. How does the Connected GPS work? Does an activity have to be started from within the app?<\/p>\n

It works with any activities, including auto-recognized ones. I literally came out of the station, walked in here, and I\u2019ve got a map as you would expect from any other activity. <\/p>\n

6. Why did you decide not to rely heavily on a paid subscription?<\/p>\n

We\u2019re a device company. Yes, we have some subscription services available for different features, but it’s always a premium thing. It’s always something that you would, as a customer, be willing to pay. <\/p>\n

We\u2019re never going charge for customers\u2019 [access to] data. Generally, they\u2019re things that we just wouldn’t be able to do without kind of revenue associated to them, so that’s not Garmin. But we are a device company, so we\u2019re about devices.<\/p>\n

7. Does Garmin Cirqa\u2019s heart rate broadcasting only work with Garmin devices?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s Bluetooth, so anyone that accepts Bluetooth [HR signals], it will broadcast to.<\/p>\n
