His com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion of block\u00adbuster-scale spec\u00adta\u00adcle and per\u00adson\u00adal vision, a rare expe\u00adri\u00adence indeed at the the\u00adater these days, can real\u00adly only be achieved by film\u00admak\u00aders with a thor\u00adough\u00adgo\u00ading love of the medi\u00adum. Most of us will require no fur\u00adther proof of that love than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=t9fgFt-Ibik\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">this new video cap\u00adtur\u00ading his vis\u00adit to the Cri\u00adte\u00adri\u00adon Clos\u00adet<\/a>, that both hal\u00adlowed and much-YouTubed space jam-packed with releas\u00ades from the most wide\u00adly known home-video brand for cinephiles.<\/p>\n<p>Unsur\u00adpris\u00ading\u00adly, it\u2019s not his first vis\u00adit. \u201cLast time I was here, there were no cam\u00aderas, and I got to just come and steal some films,\u201d he says, \u201cbut now I\u2019m singing for my sup\u00adper.\u201d Unlike some film\u00admak\u00aders, he does\u00adn\u2019t play it cool for the audi\u00adence; rather, he imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly starts pulling down\u00a0Don Siegel\u2019s neo-noir Hem\u00ading\u00adway adap\u00adta\u00adtion\u00a0The Killers, a five-pic\u00adture John Cas\u00adsavetes box set, and Al Rein\u00adert\u2019s Bri\u00adan Eno-scored NASA doc\u00adu\u00admen\u00adtary For All Mankind. It\u2019s not a sur\u00adprise to see him go for an Orson Welles movie, but\u00a0the one that first catch\u00ades his eye is\u00a0Mr. Arkadin, which Welles \u201cmade all over the world in the scrap\u00adpi\u00adest, most sort of home\u00admade, put-his-friends-togeth\u00ader, grab-some-cos\u00adtumes, find-an-inter\u00adest\u00ading-loca\u00adtion kind of way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fritz Lang\u2019s\u00a0The Tes\u00adta\u00adment of Dr. Mabuse, he recalls, pro\u00advid\u00aded him and his broth\u00ader-col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtor inspi\u00adra\u00adtion for the Jok\u00ader as famous\u00adly por\u00adtrayed by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight. The com\u00adplete Apu tril\u00ado\u00adgy by Satya\u00adjit Ray reminds him that, how\u00adev\u00ader great an impact the first of those films made on him, he nev\u00ader did watch the oth\u00ader two. His taste in movies, too, reflects a streak of high Amer\u00adi\u00adcan\u00adism, which man\u00adi\u00adfests in selec\u00adtions like Spike Lee\u2019s\u00a0Mal\u00adcolm X, David Lynch\u2019s Lost High\u00adway, Carl Franklin\u2019s\u00a0One False Move,\u00a0and Richard Lin\u00adklater\u2019s\u00a0Boy\u00adhood. (As for Robert Alt\u00adman\u2019s satir\u00adi\u00adcal thriller The Play\u00ader, it would be hard to imag\u00adine how he could\u00adn\u2019t appre\u00adci\u00adate its wicked\u00adly inci\u00adsive depic\u00adtion of\u00a0\u201cthe Indus\u00adtry.\u201d) Com\u00ading to the end of his Clos\u00adet time, he also man\u00adages to grab God\u00adfrey Reg\u00adgio\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openculture.com\/2012\/02\/koyaanisqatsi_at_1552_speed.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Qat\u00adsi<\/a> tril\u00ado\u00adgy, which con\u00adsti\u00adtutes \u201cone of the great pieces of pure cin\u00ade\u00adma,\u201d and Car\u00adroll Bal\u00adlard\u2019s The Black Stal\u00adlion, a child\u00adhood favorite that stayed with him.
