\n\tAngelina Jolie<\/a> is set to star in the new spy thriller \u201cThe Initiative,\u201d reuniting with her \u201cMr. and Mrs. Smith\u201d director Doug Liman<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tUniversal is in talks to land the hot project with F. Scott Frazier (\u201cCollide,\u201d \u201cxXx: The Return of Xander Cage\u201d) attached to write the screenplay \u2014 plot details for which are being kept under wraps \u2014 and Jeff Kirschenbaum to produce for Roth\/Kirschenbaum Films. Like Liman, RK Films also has a solid relationship with Jolie as the company backed Disney\u2019s hit \u201cMaleficent\u201d movies, in which she played the title role. <\/p>\n

\n\tWhile plot details are being kept under wraps, \u201cThe Initiative\u201d looks to return Jolie to the slick action thrillers that made her a box office megastar, including \u201cSalt,\u201d \u201cThe Tourist\u201d and \u201cWanted.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIf the deal with Universal closes, executive VP of production development Jay Polidoro and director of development Tony Ducret will oversee the project for the studio.<\/p>\n

\n\tWinner of the best supporting actress Oscar for \u201cGirl, Interrupted,\u201d Jolie was most recently seen in Pablo Larra\u00edn\u2019s \u201cMaria,\u201d where she earned rave reviews for portraying famed soprano Maria Callas. Upcoming, Jolie stars in Alice Winocour\u2019s bilingual drama \u201cCouture,\u201d which she also produced, and is set for the feature adaptation of \u201cAnxious People\u201d from Marc Foster. Her directing r\u00e9sum\u00e9 includes \u201cFirst They Killed My Father,\u201d which she also produced and co-wrote; the Oscar-nominated biopic \u201cUnbroken\u201d; and the upcoming film \u201cWithout Blood\u201d, starring Salma Hayek Pinault and Demian Bichir, based on the novel by Alessandro Baricco. She is also a Tony winner as a producer of the Broadway musical \u201cThe Outsiders.\u201d Jolie is repped by WME and Johnson Shapiro. <\/p>\n

\n\tLiman \u2014 who most recently helmed \u201cRoadhouse,\u201d a huge hit for Amazon MGM Studios, and \u201cThe Instigations\u201d on Apple TV+ \u2014 continues his run with Universal after he directed 2002\u2019s \u201cThe Bourne Identity\u201d and 2017\u2019s \u201cAmerican Made,\u201d starring Tom Cruise. Liman and Cruise are currently developing a movie for the studio, which will be shot entirely in space.<\/p>\n

\n\tLiman, Frazier and Kirschenbaum are repped by CAA. Liman is also repped by Weintraub Tobin and Frazier by McKuin Frankel.<\/p>\n
