{"id":787862,"date":"2026-07-27T19:31:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-27T19:31:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/787862\/"},"modified":"2026-07-27T19:31:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T19:31:09","slug":"canal-pledges-more-than-1-billion-for-french-european-cinema","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/787862\/","title":{"rendered":"Canal+ Pledges More Than $1 Billion For French &#038; European Cinema"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/canal-2\/\" id=\"auto-tag_canal-2\" data-tag=\"canal-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canal+<\/a> has pledged more than $1 billion (\u20ac980 million) for French and European cinema over five years in a fresh deal with France\u2019s BLOC group, gathering film guilds, SRF, the SPI, the UPC, DIRE, the SDI and Animfrance, as well as director body ARP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe Paris-based pay-TV giant heralded the deal \u2013 which begins in 2028 and applies to Canal+ and CIN\u00c9+ OCS \u2013 as unprecedented for its scale and duration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe accord renews a previous accord in which Canal+ pledged \u20ac480 million for French and European films from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2027. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tCanal+ said the deal reaffirmed its commitment to its founding principle of supporting the French cultural exception, under which cinema is classed as a creative art form that requires a specific approach to funding, support and distribution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe accord comes amid pushback from parts of the French film industry in recent months over concerns of the perceived influence of conservative media tycoon Vincent Bollor\u00e9 on the Paris-based pay-TV giant via the 30% stake of his Bollor\u00e9 Group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tEmotions spilled over at Cannes Film Festival in May with the launch of a <a data-id=\"1236913758\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/05\/maxime-saada-canal-plus-signatories-boycott-petition-1236913758\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">petition entitled \u201cTime To Switch-Off Bollor\u00e9\u201d<\/a> signed by hundreds of French and European artists who expressed fears that diversity and pluralism could be at risk at Canal+ and the wider film business, as the latter took up a 34% stake in historic film group and exhibitor UGC this year with an option to buy it outright in 2028. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThey cited the populist, rightwing trajectory of news channel CNews and Sunday newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche after Vivendi, in which the Bollor\u00e9 Group retains a 29.3% a stake, took control of their parent companies, which has since been diluted with the 2024 split of its subsidiaries into four entities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tBoth Canal+ CEO Maxime Saada and <a data-id=\"1236923209\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/05\/cyrille-bollore-challenges-anti-bollore-letter-1236923209\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bollor\u00e9 Group CEO Cyril Bollor\u00e9<\/a> have since batted back suggestions of political interference at Canal+.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn Thursday\u2019s announcement, Canal+ highlighted that the new deal would also see a strengthening of its support for new filmmakers and new styles of filmmaking; debut films and emerging talent; diversity film and animated films.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe pay-TV giant would also include measures to support medium budget mainstream films \u2013 referred to as \u2018films du milieu\u2019 which it said were \u201c essential to the renewal of French cinema and its economic stability\u201d, as well as ambitious works aimed at a wide audience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe agreement also includes several qualitative commitments aimed at improving the visibility of movies and supporting diversity in film productions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cI am delighted with this new agreement, which highlights the longstanding ties between Canal+ and cinema.
