The game did not sell the millions Electronic Arts wanted it to, BioWare was <a href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/dragon-age-dreadwolf-mass-effect-4-bioware-layoffs-2-1850766754\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cut to the bone<\/a> in the months that followed, and now the RPG powerhouse is a one-game studio working exclusively on a new Mass Effect. What does the future of Dragon Age look like? Does it even have one? Former series producer Mark Darrah is not hopeful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem is I don\u2019t know who at BioWare would pitch a Dragon Age,\u201d Darrah, who left BioWare in 2021 after 23 years at the studio, recently <a href=\"https:\/\/frvr.com\/blog\/dragon-age-creator-mark-darrah-has-little-faith-the-series-will-return-due-to-eas-complicated-relationship-to-shipping-games-at-all\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told FRVR<\/a> (via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/dragon-age\/ea-is-a-hedge-fund-with-a-videogame-hobby-former-dragon-age-boss-says-and-thats-why-he-reckons-the-series-is-probably-dead-and-buried\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PC Gamer<\/a>). \u201cSo the other option is somebody else within the EA organization decides they\u2019re gonna pitch a Dragon Age, and what I expect would happen if they try to do that is somebody at BioWare would essentially become one of those people jumping under the vents to rip that person apart. I suspect that it wouldn\u2019t happen for a variety of reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He noted that EA currently controls lots of dormant IPs, and mentioned the publisher\u2019s sprawling scale and the way its annualized sports franchises outperform one-off hits. \u201cI think it was happening because of EA\u2019s complicated relationship to shipping games at all,\u201d Darrah said of the long time it took Veilguard to eventually ship. \u201cSomeone once described to me EA as a hedge fund with a video game hobby that it wished it didn\u2019t spend so much money on. And I think that remains true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The veteran producer doesn\u2019t paint a promising picture of Dragon Age\u2018s future, or even BioWare\u2019s for that matter, as EA prepares to close its leveraged buyout to a consortium of investors, the biggest one of which is Saudi Arabia. \u201cIf you\u2019re in the Saudi investment, do you want a Dragon Age game to exist?\u201d he asked rhetorically. \u201cI could argue yes and no\u2026do you want BioWare at all in this world?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BioWare would certainly be far from the first acquisition EA later ruined.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Dragon Age: The Veilguard did not do well.
