North Dukeland Street<\/a> between Liberty Heights Avenue and Gwynns Falls Parkway as part of a resurfacing project.<\/p>\nThe plan includes adding multimodal lanes, which can be used by bikes, permanent parking, bump-outs, and reducing car lanes from four to two.<\/p>\n
“We do not think that it makes sense to put a bike lane or multimodal lane on every street in the city, that’s not a network. We’re thinking about building out a network so you can get to all parts of the city safely and easily,” said a representative with the city’s Department of Transportation.<\/p>\n
She added, “Right now, we have a network that works for cars in the city, but we are seeking to have a network that works for biking and walking and rolling and taking transit.”<\/p>\n
The city stated that the upgrades are designed to be safe and accessible for people walking, biking, and driving.<\/p>\n
Some residents, however, expressed concerns about the proposed changes.<\/p>\n
Lykinda Camper, president of the Greater Mount Holly Community Development Corporation, said, “The narrowing of the roads including those bump-outs and just taking space away from the cars is what I think is not going to work.”<\/p>\n
“Coming on Gwynns Falls Parkway, there are cars that do not slow down and I don’t think the bike riders would be safe even with a bike lane,” said Mary Hughes, who is vice president of Friends of Gwynns Falls Parkway.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, many residents said they felt the city could have sought more input from the surrounding community about the plan.<\/p>\n
“We are pro safety, we want everybody who uses the streets to be safe, but we want them to be prioritized for use including the people, the voices of people who live in those residences and communities,” said Linda Batts, a local resident.<\/p>\n
The final design phase is set to begin in winter and installation is set to start next spring.<\/p>\n
