In 1977, Crosby, Stills & Nash<\/a> had already spent several years releasing hit after hit. The supergroup, which started with David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash, had been releasing music since 1969, with their debut Crosby, Stills & Nash record. Neil Young joined from 1969 to 1970, making it Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young<\/a>, returning in 1973 and 1974, before leaving again for over a decade.<\/p>\n

Undeterred, the three remaining members continued to release music. In 1977, Crosby, Stills & Nash released \u201cJust A Song Before I Go\u201d. It was the debut single from CSN, their third studio album, and the song was written solely by Nash.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust A Song Before I Go\u201d became the band\u2019s highest-charting single, peaking at No. 5. The success of the song is a bit surprising, since Nash later admits he didn\u2019t spend much time on \u201cJust A Song Before I Go\u201d, writing the entire song in about 15 minutes.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust A Song Before I Go\u201d says, \u201cJust a song before I go \/ To whom it may concern \/ Travelling twice the speed of sound \/ It\u2019s easy to get burned \/ When the shows were over \/ We had to get back home \/ And when we opened up the door \/ I had to be alone.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Not only did Nash write \u201cJust A Song Before I Go\u201d quickly, but he also wrote it in response to a dare.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cGraham was at home in Hawaii, about to go off on tour,\u201d Crosby recalls<\/a>. \u201dThe guy who was going to take him to the airport said, \u2018We\u2019ve got 15 minutes. I\u2019ll bet you can\u2019t write a song in that amount of time.\u2019 Well, you don\u2019t smart off to Nash like that. He\u2019ll do it. This is the result.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Nash, the guy taking him to the airport bet him $500.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cI was at the home of a friend of mine, Spider was his name,\u201d Nash remembers<\/a>. \u201cAnd as I got up to leave, he said, \u2018You know what? You\u2019re supposed to be a big-shot songwriter \u2026 I bet you can\u2019t write a song before you go home.\u2019 I said, \u2018Really? You bet? How much do you bet?\u2019 He said, \u2018$500 you can\u2019t write a song just before you leave.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Later, Nash said he still held onto the money he won in the bet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI still have his $500 because it was written on a bet, really,\u201d Nash reveals. \u201cIt was the biggest single hit that CSN ever had, I believe. Like my friend Joe Wall says, \u2018If I\u2019d have known it was going to be such a big hit, I\u2019d have written a better song.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
