In the U.S., attitudes toward drinking tend to vary more widely by region, religion and social norms, experts say.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Jessica Steinman, chief clinical officer at No Matter What Recovery in Los Angeles, noted that British and American cultures have always been very different, and that includes alcohol consumption.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_2243209\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/drinking-alcohol-may-influence-cravings-certain-foods-surprising-way-study-suggests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">DRINKING ALCOHOL MAY INFLUENCE CRAVINGS FOR CERTAIN FOODS IN A SURPRISING WAY, STUDY SUGGESTS<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;Americans can\u2019t legally drink until 21, and it is frowned upon to do so before that age,&#8221; she told Fox News Digital. &#8220;In England, there is less stigma and restrictions around alcohol, which changes how people view it and drink it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When does drinking become alcohol use disorder?<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;Regardless of where anyone lives and regardless of their culture, when <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_2243210\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/mental-health\/drug-and-substance-abuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">alcohol or substances<\/a> start negatively affecting someone\u2019s life or when someone cannot control the levels of alcohol they drink, then it is a problem,&#8221; Steinman said.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;When drinking gets in the way of a job, school or relationships \u2014 or when people start numbing out from difficult feelings or escaping their problems through alcohol \u2014 it isn\u2019t just cultural drinking, it\u2019s an addiction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/friends-brunch-drinks-lighter-alcohol.jpg\" alt=\"Friends drinking cocktails outside during day at restaurant.\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>In the U.S., attitudes toward drinking tend to vary more widely by region, religion and social norms, experts say. (iStock)<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Steinman said she&#8217;s concerned that people with alcohol use disorder may dismiss or justify their drinking as a normal part of their local culture, making them less likely to recognize it as a problem and seek help.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Chris Tuell, EdD., clinical director of addiction services at Lindner Center of HOPE and associate professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, reiterated that Sheeran\u2019s comments highlight how culture influences people\u2019s <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_2243211\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/beer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">perceptions of alcohol<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_2243212\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/lifestyle\/quizzes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">TEST YOURSELF WITH OUR LATEST LIFESTYLE QUIZ<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;What is considered \u2018normal\u2019 in one country may seem excessive in another,&#8221; he told Fox News Digital. &#8220;In parts of the U.K., Ireland, Germany, Australia or even parts of the U.S., drinking is woven into sporting events, celebrations, work gatherings and family traditions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Tuell noted, however, that culture does not determine whether someone has alcohol use disorder (AUD).<\/p>\n<p class=\"quote-text\">&#8220;When drinking gets in the way of a job, school or relationships &#8230; it isn\u2019t just cultural drinking, it\u2019s an addiction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;The fact that something is common does not automatically <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_2243213\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">make it healthy<\/a> \u2014 the same principle applies to alcohol,&#8221; he told Fox News Digital. &#8220;A person may live in a culture where drinking every evening is expected. Another person may rarely drink because their culture discourages alcohol altogether.
