While capping out-of-pocket costs is a meaningful benefit for beneficiaries, those expenses don&#8217;t simply disappear,\u201d Kevin Thompson, the CEO of 9i Capital Group and the host of the 9innings podcast, told Newsweek.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-module-scss-module__0ovlkG__blockParagraph\" blockindex=\"21\" articletitle=\"Medicare Update: New Estimate of How Much Premiums Will Increase\">\u201cThey&#8217;re shifted elsewhere in the system, ultimately increasing costs for taxpayers and placing additional financial pressure on Medicare over the long term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There Is Some Good News<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-module-scss-module__0ovlkG__blockParagraph\" blockindex=\"23\" articletitle=\"Medicare Update: New Estimate of How Much Premiums Will Increase\">The projected 3.25 percent increase would be the smallest percentage rise in Medicare Part B premiums since 2023, which will be some good news for seniors enrolled in Medicare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-module-scss-module__0ovlkG__blockParagraph\" blockindex=\"24\" articletitle=\"Medicare Update: New Estimate of How Much Premiums Will Increase\">The trustees also lowered their outlook compared with last year&#8217;s report. The 2025 trustees report had projected a 2027 premium of $218.60 per month. The latest estimate is more than $9 lower at roughly $209.50.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moaa.org\/content\/publications-and-media\/news-articles\/2026-news-articles\/finance\/medicare-report-estimates-future-part-b-premiums.-what-will-you-pay-in-2027-and-beyond\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-module-scss-module__0ovlkG__blockParagraph\" blockindex=\"25\" articletitle=\"Medicare Update: New Estimate of How Much Premiums Will Increase\">Still, the Social Security cost of living adjustment (COLA) is rarely enough to make up for the increased spending senior citizens face due to inflation, said Drew Powers, the founder of Illinois-based Powers Financial Group. That means many seniors will still be struggling even with the lower premium uptick.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-module-scss-module__0ovlkG__blockParagraph\" blockindex=\"26\" articletitle=\"Medicare Update: New Estimate of How Much Premiums Will Increase\">\u201cWith Medicare premiums rising, it is a double-whammy for our seniors: the cost of living is going up faster than the adjustment while more of their benefits go to pay for Medicare,\u201d Powers told Newsweek. \u201cIt\u2019s a lose-lose, especially for our most vulnerable seniors who rely on Social Security for their retirement income.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What About Higher-Income Beneficiaries?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-module-scss-module__0ovlkG__blockParagraph\" blockindex=\"28\" articletitle=\"Medicare Update: New Estimate of How Much Premiums Will Increase\">Some Medicare recipients pay more than the standard premium through the Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA), which applies to higher-income households.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-module-scss-module__0ovlkG__blockParagraph\" blockindex=\"29\" articletitle=\"Medicare Update: New Estimate of How Much Premiums Will Increase\">While official 2027 income thresholds have not yet been released, the first IRMAA bracket could begin around $112,000 for individual filers and $224,000 for married couples filing jointly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-module-scss-module__0ovlkG__blockParagraph\" blockindex=\"30\" articletitle=\"Medicare Update: New Estimate of How Much Premiums Will Increase\">\u201cYour 2027 Medicare premium isn&#8217;t decided in 2027. It&#8217;s decided by your 2025 tax return, because IRMAA runs on a two-year lookback. A Roth conversion in 2025 can show up as a Medicare surcharge in 2027,\u201d Michael Ryan, a finance expert and the founder of MichaelRyanMoney.com, told Newsweek.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-module-scss-module__0ovlkG__blockParagraph\" blockindex=\"31\" articletitle=\"Medicare Update: New Estimate of How Much Premiums Will Increase\">\u201cSo pull the 2025 return and look at the MAGI against the current brackets. If a life-changing event cut income since then, form SSA-44 exists for exactly that. A voluntary conversion or capital gain generally won&#8217;t qualify.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What Happens Next<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-module-scss-module__0ovlkG__blockParagraph\" blockindex=\"34\" articletitle=\"Medicare Update: New Estimate of How Much Premiums Will Increase\">The projected premium increase is not final. The Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services typically announces official Medicare Part B premiums, deductibles and IRMAA brackets in the fall, usually around November.
