President Trump and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy don’t share the same vision of the war in the Middle East, an analyst said Tuesday, after Mr. Trump downplayed Russia’s alleged support for Iran.<\/p>\n
Ukraine struck an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea on Saturday, killing one sailor and wounding another, according to Tehran.<\/p>\n
Zelenskyy, who arrived Tuesday at the White House for a closed-door meeting with Mr. Trump, said the previous day that Iran had “already attacked us,” referring to Iran supplying Russia with attack drones. \u00a0<\/p>\n
Ukrainian Ambassador to Israel Yevgen Korniychuk said Sunday that Israel and Ukraine were “fighting the same enemy<\/a>, a different side of the same evil axis.”<\/p>\n Phillips O’Brien, a professor of political science at St. Andrews University in Scotland, said, however, that that is not a “shared U.S.-Israeli-Ukrainian vision” of the nexus between the conflicts in the Middle East and Europe.<\/p>\n “Ukraine would like support from the United States and would love support from Israel, too, but it’s not getting much, if any,” he told CBS News’ partner network BBC News<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n “Israel has actually always been very careful to stay close to Russia,” he said, while the U.S. “is trying to cooperate with China” and “is closer to Russia than it is to most European states.”<\/p>\n Mr. Trump on Monday downplayed accusations made not only by Ukrainian officials, but by European officials publicly<\/a>, and by U.S. officials to CBS News<\/a>, that Russia has aided Iran during the war.<\/p>\n
