After leading the United States to its best overall finish at the World Cup since 2010, Mauricio Pochettino is closing in on a contract extension to remain head coach. <\/p>\n

According to The Athletic<\/a>, Pochettino and U.S. Soccer are “close” on a deal that would keep him on board through the 2030 World Cup. <\/p>\n

Pochettino\u00a0reportedly<\/a>\u00a0was presented an extension by the United States Soccer Federation in June, soon after the U.S. clinched first place in Group D at the World Cup.<\/p>\n

No decision from Pochettino was expected to come until after the conclusion of the tournament. His previous contract expired at the end of the World Cup.<\/p>\n

U.S. Soccer CEO J.T. Batson\u00a0told reporters<\/a>\u00a0on July 16 the two sides were still in “active” discussions about a new deal.<\/p>\n

That same day, Pochettino said on Spanish radio Cadena Cope (h\/t\u00a0ESPN<\/a>) that he was expecting to make a decision within the next week.<\/p>\n

“We are evaluating it, looking at it,” he said. “They [US Soccer] have made me an offer to continue and we will see. Next week we will take a decision.”<\/p>\n

Even though that timeline has since passed, there is no indication Pochettino won’t eventually sign an extension. It’s also unclear what the financial terms of a new deal will include.<\/p>\n

Pochettino was originally hired as USA’s head coach in September 2024, two months after Gregg Berhalter was fired following a third-place finish in group play at the Copa Am\u00e9rica tournament.<\/p>\n

The 54-year-old Pochettino has a 17-2-12 record in 31 matches with the United States.
