Gainesville\u2019s Julius Irving and Leigh Scott premiered documentaries last week in Los Angeles\u00a0at the Directors Guild of America, exploring the penal system through a project with Represent Justice.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Irving and Scott were selected for Represent Justice\u2019s Ambassador Program\u00a0and received training for film production and impact campaigning, according to a\u00a0release from Community Spring, where both\u00a0served\u00a0as fellows and Irving\u00a0is\u00a0working as community engagement coordinator.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Irving\u2019s film is called \u201cThe Silent (R)evolution: Freedom from the Inside Out\u201d and deals with a man\u00a0entering\u00a0a courtroom expecting release\u00a0but confronting a surprise verdict.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

See Member Benefits<\/a>Join Our Newsletter<\/a><\/p>\n Leigh\u2019s film asks audiences to imagine an emergency response system that\u00a0confronts\u00a0mental health crises with care, not incarceration.\u00a0<\/p>\n Represent Justice also had eight other films made by members of the cohort, and the event\u00a0included\u00a0panel discussions with\u00a0the group.\u00a0<\/p>\n Lindsay Kallman, executive director of Community Spring, and Alachua County Commissioner Mary Alford also attended the\u00a0premieres.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI was proud to see Alachua County represented so well in this national conversation about justice reform,\u201d Alford said in a release. \u201cSo many families are affected and continue to be affected after a sentence has been fully served. Whether\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0housing, employment, parenting or care for chronic medical conditions, the effects on individuals and families are often overwhelming and translate to\u00a0impacts\u00a0to\u00a0the larger community.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n The two films will be shown at Heartwood Soundstage on Sept. 17. Alford said she hopes\u00a0people attend and join the discussion about what Alachua County can change\u00a0in\u00a0the justice system.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
