{"id":792957,"date":"2026-07-30T08:04:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T08:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/792957\/"},"modified":"2026-07-30T08:04:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T08:04:09","slug":"unhealthy-foods-should-multibuy-offers-on-be-banned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/792957\/","title":{"rendered":"Unhealthy foods: Should multibuy offers on be banned?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">People are being asked for their views on proposals that could see the end of multibuy offers on certain food products which are deemed unhealthy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Department of Health (DoH) said obesity is one of the biggest public health challenges facing Northern Ireland, with 65% of adults living with obesity or excess weight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">To help tackle the issue, the DoH and Food Standards Agency (FSA) are proposing measures similar to those which already exist in England and Wales, and due to come into effect in Scotland in October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">They are also considering restricting where these products can be placed in a supermarket, including online stores, and restricting free refills of sugar-sweetened soft drinks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The DoH and FSA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health-ni.gov.uk\/consultations\/consultation-restricting-promotions-products-high-fat-sugar-and-salt-hfss\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launched the consultation, external<\/a> on the issue on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">According to the DoH, evidence shows that the promotion of food and drink high in fat, sugar and salt through price-based incentives, prominent placement and marketing tactics can significantly influence consumer purchasing behaviour, often at the expense of healthier options, which can contribute to obesity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Obesity can lead to a higher risk of major health conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and some cancers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"People are being asked for their views on proposals that could see the end of multibuy offers on&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":792958,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[61],"tags":[97,269],"class_list":["post-792957","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nutrition","tag-health","tag-nutrition"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/792957","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=792957"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/792957\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/792958"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=792957"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=792957"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=792957"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
