McCarthy spoke with the soon-to-be 19-year-old at the 12th annual Smilezone Foundation Celebrity Golf Tournament at Lionhead Golf Club. Contrary to former Islanders legend Bryan Trottier<\/a>, who believes Schaefer is a \u2018terrific kid\u2019 who would \u2019embrace the opportunity.\u2019 Trottier also noted that a player\u2019s game also leads by example, and the former assistant captain with his OHL club, the Erie Otters, has done just that in his NHL rookie season.<\/p>\n Although the very personable and outgoing Schaefer has demonstrated extremely mature qualities at such a young age, his play also heightens his case for being a leader on Long Island. Scoring 23 goals for nearly 60 points, he became the youngest Calder Trophy winner in NHL history, the sixth Islander to win the award, joining franchise legends like Mike Bossy<\/a>, Denis Potvin<\/a>, and Mat Barzal<\/a>. He is only the fourth defenseman selected first-overall to win the award, alongside Aaron Ekblad<\/a> and fellow Islanders blueliners Potvin and Bryan Berard<\/a>. He unanimously won the Calder Trophy and was the first to do so since Teemu Selanne<\/a> in the 1992-93 season with the Winnipeg Jets.<\/p>\n Signs point to Schaefer as a tenured Islander as of right now, but for the time being, he\u2019s still young and on an entry-level contract. The difference between the two is the term they\u2019re signed to in the organization\u2019s books. However, it isn\u2019t out of the ordinary to see younger NHL players get the \u2018C\u2019 stitched on their jersey very early into their careers. Of note, Connor McDavid<\/a>, Gabriel Landeskog<\/a>, and Sidney Crosby<\/a> were all of the same age, in the latter days of being 19-years-old, when they were named captains.<\/p>\n Defensemen in the current NHL landscape aren\u2019t usually wearing the C, only four NHL teams have defensemen as their primary leaders. Roman Josi<\/a> earned the honor for the Predators at age 27 in the 2017-18 season and is the longest tenured blueline captain. Jared Spurgeon<\/a> was named Wild captain in 2020, when he was 31.
