{"id":793332,"date":"2026-07-30T12:47:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T12:47:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/793332\/"},"modified":"2026-07-30T12:47:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T12:47:11","slug":"fire-damages-agri-star-kosher-processing-plant-in-iowa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/793332\/","title":{"rendered":"Fire Damages Agri Star Kosher Processing Plant in Iowa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the largest Kosher processing plants in the nation sustained major damage in a fire early this week.<\/p>\n<p>The blaze broke out at the Agri Star processing plant in Postville, Iowa, early Tuesday morning, leading to a response by multiple fire departments as well as warnings about air quality. Residents were also asked to curb water usage as so much was expended fighting the fire.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/winneshiekcountyem\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The office of the Sheriff of Allamakee County<\/a> said the blaze was first reported at 3:56 a.m. on July 28 and that there were no injuries. The cause of the fire has as yet to be determined.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agristarmeatandpoultry.com\/aboutus.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Agri Star<\/a> is one the largest Kosher processing plants in the country, producing tens-of-millions of pounds of beef and poultry annually.<\/p>\n<p>When asked if the fire would disrupt production for coming Jewish High Holidays, an Agri Star spokesperson told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/news\/u-s-news\/too-soon-to-know-if-fire-at-agri-star-meat-and-poultry-plant-will-disrupt-product-distribution-for-upcoming-holidays-major-kosher-plant-says\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jerusalem News Syndicate,<\/a> \u201cWe\u2019re in the process of getting things going. \u2026 We\u2019re doing the best we can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/anash.org\/fire-breaks-out-at-agri-star-meat-poultry-plant-in-postville\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anash.org,<\/a> the company, currently owned by Hershey Friedman, was founded as Agriprocessors three decades ago by the Rubashkin family, becoming the largest Kosher meat processor in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>It is one of the largest employers in Northeast Iowa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a very heavy fire, and people are extremely worried about what will happen with the plant going forward,\u201d Shliach Rabbi Aron Schimmel told Anash.org in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany people in the area rely on the facility for their parnassah [Hebrew term for \u201clivelihood\u201d], and there is a lot of concern among workers and their families about what this means for their livelihoods.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"One of the largest Kosher processing plants in the nation sustained major damage in a fire early this&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":793333,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[61],"tags":[97,269],"class_list":["post-793332","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nutrition","tag-health","tag-nutrition"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/793332","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=793332"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/793332\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/793333"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=793332"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=793332"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=793332"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
