It\u2019s a fantastic move that works your quads, glutes, hamstrings and calves, while also challenging your stability and coordination, so it\u2014or its more common relative, the reverse lunge, which can be gentler on your knees\u2014is well worth mastering.<\/p>\n<p>But you shouldn\u2019t stop there. After a while, your body will adapt to the demand the lunge places on it. Tempo reverse lunge<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-0d971e48-8680-11f1-bf86-8b71e8dd3252\">\u201cPerfect for anyone looking to build strength, improve control, and develop better movement quality,\u201d Woolcock says.<\/p>\n<p>How to do it:<\/p>\n<p>Stand with your feet close together and your hands on your hips for balance.Step your right foot back, landing on your toes.Bend both knees to 90\u00b0 to lower\u2014taking three seconds to get to the stopping point with your right knee should finish just above the floor.Push through your left foot to stand upright slowly.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-0d971f38-8680-11f1-bb21-ddbb4cabc933\">When to progress: \u201cOnce you\u2019ve mastered the slow lowering phase of the tempo reverse lunge, and can do it with control through the movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            What to read next<\/p>\n<p>    <a id=\"elk-0d9722b2-8680-11f1-a230-35e37a758e06\"\/>4. When you can perform the movement without wobbling or losing balance, progress to adding a small hop at the top,\u201d she says. When you can perform reverse lunges with a knee drive and hop confidently while maintaining balance and proper alignment, try the next progression.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-0d9725aa-8680-11f1-8f04-4b50b8932193\"\/>5. Jump lunge<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-0d972622-8680-11f1-a0ec-b55bcae1b807\">\u201cThis is an advanced variation designed for people who already have excellent strength, stability and landing mechanics,\u201d explains Woolcock. \u201cIt is ideal for building lower-body power while elevating the heart rate.
