After a year of horror cinema that\u2019s seen Gen Z filmmakers emerge as major talents<\/a>, Bleecker Street is taking it old school \u2014 as in, 19th-century old school. The distributor has released the full trailer<\/a> for \u201cVictorian Psycho<\/a>,\u201d their latest horror movie coming out this fall. <\/p>\n

Based on the 2025 horror novel by Virginia Feito, \u201cVictorian Psycho\u201d stars scream queen Maika Monroe<\/a> \u2014 known for her roles in \u201cIt Follows\u201d and \u201cLonglegs\u201d \u2014 as Winifred Notty, an eccentric young woman in Victorian England who works as a governess for wealthy families. As the film<\/a> begins, she is starting her new assignment, teaching the young children of Mr. and Mrs. Pounds (Jason Isaacs and Ruth Wilson) at the couple\u2019s Yorkshire estate. <\/p>\n

As she adjusts to her work teaching Andrew (\u201cHamnet\u201d breakout Jacobi Jupe) and Drusilla (Evie Templeton), staff around the sprawling manor disappear, and nurse Ms. Lamb (Thomasin McKenzie) soon begins to suspect Winifred is responsible. The accusations only make Winifred, who has secretly been dealing with a rapidly fraying psyche, more paranoid, leading to bloody and dangerous consequences. The film is the third feature from director Zachary Wigon<\/a>, who previously made \u201cThe Heart Machine\u201d and \u201cSanctuary.\u201d Feito wrote the script, adapting her own work<\/p>\n

\u201cVictorian Psycho\u201d first premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival in May, in the Un Certain Regard competition. It received mixed to positive reviews from critics at the fest. IndieWire\u2019s Kate Erbland gave the film a \u201cB,\u201d<\/a> praising Monroe\u2019s performance by writing that her \u201cWinifred practically vibrates with the need to hold things together. It does not always work for her, but it is nearly always funny, deliciously and dementedly so.\u201d However, she also criticized some of the changes made to the original novel and the toning down of its more extreme content, saying that \u201cBy tempering her impulses and inner monologue, the film ends with less of the giddy gore that makes the rest of it such a dark treat. Dare we say it? We would have loved for this one to go full, ahem, boar.\u201d <\/p>\n

Bleecker Street will release \u201cVictorian Psycho\u201d in theaters September 25.
