City and park staff said they were also reviewing a visitor\u2019s report of a possible mountain lion encounter near Suycott Valley Trail in the North Fortuna area about 6:50 p.m. on July 23, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DbWinDvjug0\/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ%3D%3D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">city said<\/a> on Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>Officials did not have details on the sex or age of the cat but said they believe it to be the same animal from both sightings.<\/p>\n<p>While not providing the specific location, city officials said they had put up signs near three trailheads closest to the sightings, including Jackson River Crossing, Suycott Valley and Grasslands.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Mountain lion warning signs have been posted near recent sighting locations, including at the Grasslands Crossing near the East Fortuna Staging Area in Mission Trails Regional Park on Thursday, July 30, 2026, in Santee, CA. (Luke Johnson \/ The San Diego Union-Tribune)<\/p>\n<p>The signs include warnings to keep children close, pets leashed and not to run away during an encounter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFace the lion and back away slowly,\u201d said Caleb Olsen, a city spokesperson. \u201cMake yourself as large and as loud as possible. Hold a backpack or open a jacket over your head. (Luke Johnson \/ The San Diego Union-Tribune)<\/p>\n<p>Hikers and visitors to the park, which includes 65 miles of trails across 7,220 acres of land, were also urged to be aware of their surroundings and not wear headphones while on the trails.<\/p>\n<p>If attacked, city staff told people to fight back and attempt to fend the animal off.<\/p>\n<p>This is at least the third time in the last two years wild mountain lions have been spotted wandering places regularly frequented by people in San Diego County. In May, state Fish and Wildlife <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2026\/05\/04\/mountain-lion-captured-after-roaming-escondido-neighborhood\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">officials captured<\/a> and sedated a mountain lion that was seen roaming a residential neighborhood in Escondido.<\/p>\n<p>A mountain lion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2024\/03\/07\/a-mountain-lion-was-roaming-outside-oceanside-city-hall-yes-really\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was also seen<\/a> in 2024 remarkably roaming around downtown Oceanside, running by neighborhoods and businesses.
