Across social media, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DazFV6_FBco\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">thousands<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@samanthahazexo\/video\/7522947065773624607?q=period%20june&amp;t=1785303306101\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">women and people who menstruate<\/a> reported having weird periods in June.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some said it was the first time in their life that they&#8217;d experienced having a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@dreamhomesteading\/video\/7661074296839605535?q=period%20june&amp;t=1785303306101\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">double<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/conspiracy\/comments\/1usbb6e\/thousands_of_women_getting_double_periods_or\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">delayed<\/a> period.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My period is late for the first time ever,&#8221; one woman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/conspiracy\/comments\/1usbb6e\/thousands_of_women_getting_double_periods_or\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">posted<\/a> to Reddit. &#8220;Usually I&#8217;m super regular and can pinpoint the hour I&#8217;m going to get it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As the period posting picked up pace online, several videos started to link the strange phenomenon to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@activationvibration\/video\/7660930771749801246?q=period%20june&amp;t=1784536166301\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar flares, the shutdown of the Large Hadron Collider<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@sidney.brassfield\/photo\/7661694180292332814?q=period%20June%20astrology&amp;t=1785327554175\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">astrology<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@flowingsoulcircle\/video\/7660930158223838485?q=period%20june&amp;t=1785303306101\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">feminist mysticism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some people described the trend as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@flowingsoulcircle\/video\/7661454477228133653?q=period%20June%20energy&amp;t=1785336296944\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">energy shift<\/a>, the emergence of a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@priestessmicki\/video\/7661114294351711502?q=period%20June%20astrology&amp;t=1785327554175\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">collective womb<\/a>&#8221; or evidence of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@erinlyonsofficial\/video\/7661235628713053470?q=period%20june&amp;t=1784536166301\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">matriarchical consciousness \u2026 becoming the dominant force driving the decisions on this planet&#8221;.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Other people speculated that the heat waves across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/europe-braces-prolonged-heatwave-temperatures-approach-40c-2026-06-21\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Europe<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cevlkzer7vdo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">North America<\/a> \u2013 which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-26\/hundreds-of-deaths-recorded-as-heatwave-grips-europe\/106843702\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">led<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jul\/22\/france-recorded-more-than-5700-excess-deaths-during-june-heatwave\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">thousands<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2026\/jul\/13\/june-heatwave-killed-440-people-a-day-england-wales-data-suggests-climate-crisis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">of<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jul\/05\/heatwave-deaths-weather\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deaths<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/europe-recorded-10000-excess-deaths-during-late-june-heatwave-data-show-2026-07-12\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">and<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2026_European_heatwaves\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heat-related illnesses<\/a> \u2013 were affecting menstrual cycles.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Of course, the internet loves conspiracy theories,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@skyhasdied\/video\/7662831051886185742?q=period%20june&amp;t=1785303306101\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> one TikTok user. &#8220;But I&#8217;ll be the one to burst ya&#8217;ll&#8217;s bubble. This isn&#8217;t a Dr Who episode. It&#8217;s  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/climate-change\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73046\" data-postid=\"211526\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">climate change<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So was this actually a trend?<\/p>\n<p>Social media platforms <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0047272726000253\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">amplify ideas<\/a> that people are already engaging with, so there&#8217;s no way of knowing whether an online trend reflects a real-world phenomenon or if it&#8217;s a product of the algorithm.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Social media reports are not data,&#8221; Gideon Meyerowitz-Katz, an epidemiologist at the University of Wollongong, told ScienceAlert.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are women having irregular periods every month, but if it&#8217;s going viral then suddenly we all see more of the posts even though nothing has really changed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also possible that period-tracking apps could have intentionally driven the trend as a marketing exercise for their products. <\/p>\n<p>Several social media accounts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@madison.cyclesync\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">affiliated<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@clau.cycletips\/video\/7648048932441935137?q=period%20June%20raise%20hand&amp;t=1785337307971\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@grace.cycletips\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">period-tracking<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@holly.cyclesync\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">app Musa<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sabrina.hormones\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">created<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@ymeli.cycletips\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">videos<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@ttscycle.tips\/video\/7630093241353850125\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">people<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@kc.syncycle\/video\/7652830397998320926\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raising<\/a> their hands if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@melia.cyclessync\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">they<\/a> had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@pau.hormones\/video\/7654748448691965197?q=period%20June%20ghosted&amp;t=1785340803603\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">weird<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@pau.hormones\/video\/7654748448691965197?q=period%20June%20ghosted&amp;t=1785340803603\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">period<\/a> in June.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Beverley Vollenhoven, a reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist and the head of gynecology at Monash Health in Melbourne, Australia, initially thought this period trend was just &#8220;some sort of viral TikTok thing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But when I sat and thought about it, it really may depend on how much stress someone is under,&#8221; Vollenhoven told ScienceAlert.<\/p>\n<p>The recent heatwaves could be a stressor for people who are not used to them and cause abnormal periods, she said. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s feasible,&#8221; said Vollenhoven. &#8220;Do we have any evidence for it? No.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Periods can become irregular or stop temporarily when people experience severe stress such as high-school exams, a divorce, seasonal  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/depression\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73097\" data-postid=\"211526\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">depression<\/a>, an unmanaged chronic illness, psychological injury at work, anorexia or intense exercise, she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The body tends to conserve energy when it&#8217;s under stress, and one way to do that is to lower the chance of becoming pregnant by disrupting or stopping periods, said Vollenhoven.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The body has amazing defenses,&#8221; she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_stargazing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"642\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/FOMO-1200x628-_Dont-miss-the-next-breakthrough_-cosmic-colourful-642x336.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" class=\"wp-image-201722\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The environment &#8220;plays a surprisingly powerful role in menstrual health,&#8221; Nighat Arif, a general practitioner based in the United Kingdom and the author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hachette.com.au\/dr-nighat-arif\/the-knowledge-your-guide-to-female-health-from-menstruation-to-the-menopause\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a book about menstruation<\/a>, told ScienceAlert. <\/p>\n<p>Emerging research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanplh\/article\/PIIS2542-5196(25)00080-4\/fulltext\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">suggests<\/a> that long-term exposure to air pollution can disrupt the endocrine system and is linked to irregular, longer periods.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Environmental toxins, including endocrine-disrupting chemicals from plastics, pesticides and industrial pollutants, can mimic or block hormones, altering cycle timing and even shifting the age of menarche,&#8221; Arif said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Climate change is characterized by heat waves and extreme weather. <\/p>\n<p>These conditions can stress people out, raising cortisol levels and dysregulating the hypothalamic\u2013pituitary\u2013ovarian axis, which can lead to missed periods, heavier bleeding and a worsening of conditions like PCOS (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/pcos-is-officially-renamed-after-decades-of-misinformation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">now termed PMOS<\/a>) and  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/endometriosis\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73093\" data-postid=\"211526\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">endometriosis<\/a>, she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1785521959_780_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>But what about the period tracking apps \u2013 did they notice any changes in June?<\/p>\n<p>Investigating whether there was a population-level shift in menstruation in June requires &#8220;careful statistical analysis,&#8221; but it is &#8220;absolutely possible&#8221; to study, Amanda Shea, the chief science officer at period-tracking app Clue, told ScienceAlert. <\/p>\n<p>Social media can create illusory patterns because people are more likely to report unexpected changes to cycles than normal periods. <\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s also &#8220;entirely possible that people are noticing a real phenomenon,&#8221; said Shea.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When thousands of people independently report similar experiences, it&#8217;s worth paying attention.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Climate change and <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.jtherbio.2025.104302\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">extreme heat<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0147651326003635\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">are<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/global-womens-health\/articles\/10.3389\/fgwh.2025.1569046\/full\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">already<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.rbmo.2023.103551\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recognized<\/a> as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/endocrinology\/articles\/10.3389\/fendo.2023.1149284\/full\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">threat<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.xagr.2025.100444\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reproductive health<\/a>, with substantial evidence linking heat exposure to <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29968058\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">adverse<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41591-024-03395-8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pregnancy outcomes<\/a>, particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/risk-of-preterm-birth-is-dramatically-rising-as-the-world-gets-hotter\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">preterm birth<\/a> and other maternal and <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1186\/s12884-024-06512-0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">neonatal complications<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/25-year-study-reveals-disturbing-effect-heat-waves-are-having-on-births\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">25 Year Study Reveals Disturbing Effect Heat Waves Are Having on Births<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Animal studies also suggest that heat stress can impair ovarian function, follicle development and egg quality,&#8221;
