On July 24, 2025, the 4,608th Martian day, or Sol, of the mission, NASA\u2019s Curiosity rover imaged wind-eroded rocks shaped like a piece of coral in the Gale crater on Mars.<\/p>\n

One of the wind-eroded rocks was captured by Curiosity\u2019s Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI), a camera on the end of its robotic arm.<\/p>\n

\u201cNicknamed Paposo, the rock was about 5 cm (2 inches) from MAHLI when this image was taken,\u201d members of the Curiosity team wrote in a statement.<\/p>\n

On the same day, Curiosity used its Remote Micro Imager, part of its ChemCam instrument, to view another coral-shaped rock.<\/p>\n

\u201cCuriosity has found many small features like these<\/a>, which formed billions of years ago when liquid water still existed on Mars\u201d the researchers said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWater carried dissolved minerals into rock cracks and later dried, leaving the hardened minerals behind.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEons of sandblasting by the wind wore away the surrounding rock, producing unique shapes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis common process is seen extensively on Earth and has produced fantastic shapes on Mars, as well, including a flower-shaped rock.\u201d<\/p>\n

Launched November 26, 2011, Curiosity is the fourth rover the United States has sent to Mars.<\/p>\n

Led by NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the mission involves almost 500 scientists from the United States and other countries.<\/p>\n

Curiosity explores the 154-km- (96-mile) wide Gale crater and acquires rock, soil, and air samples for onboard analysis.<\/p>\n
