Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The increase is already automatic under California law, which adjusts the minimum wage annually to keep pace with inflation.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom, who is <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/30\/opinion\/gavin-newsoms-left-wing-judges-and-the-2028-stakes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expected to run for president in 2028<\/a>, contrasted himself against President Trump in announcing the increase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor years, Donald Trump and Republicans have blocked efforts to raise the federal minimum wage while handing tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations,\u201d the governor said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSign up for the California Morning Report newsletter\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCalifornia&#8217;s top news, sports and entertainment delivered to your inbox every day.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalifornia has chosen a different path \u2014 one that rewards work, grows the economy, and puts working families first. We believe if you work hard, you deserve a decent paycheck. They think $7.25 an hour is enough. We don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many California healthcare workers already saw another scheduled increase on July 1, pushing minimum wages to between $19.28 and $25 an hour depending on the type of facility.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom has had a history of trying to push wages up. He and fellow state Democrats helped push for a $20 per hour minimum wage for fast food workers, which reportedly has devastated <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/06\/09\/business\/fresh-blow-for-californias-carls-jr-as-iconic-burger-chain-to-close-more-stores\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">some companies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernor Newsom wants a badge of honor for announcing the highest statewide wage mandate in the country. But his track record of wage hikes\u2013including the $20 fast food wage\u2013put workers dead last, with tens of thousands of lost jobs, shuttered businesses and higher prices for Californians,\u201d said Rebekah Paxton, research director at the Employment Policies Institute.<\/p>\n<p>State Republicans blasted Newsom for playing politics with the wage announcement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery Californian deserves a raise. The problem is Sacramento keeps raising the cost of living right along with it,\u201d the California Assembly GOP Caucus said in a statement to The Post. \u201cInstead of celebrating another wage increase, the governor should explain why California keeps getting more expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>State Sen. Tony Strickland (R) told The Post that businesses in the state will suffer even more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalifornia is already about as anti-business as it gets, and now another minimum wage increase is set to take effect next year.
