MAPLETON, N.D. — According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, a mountain lion was recently spotted in Mapleton.

A Mapleton resident reported seeing a mountain lion near Annie’s Lane on Thursday morning, July 30. Although the sighting has not been confirmed, residents in the area should be aware of what to do, and who to call, if they see it.

First, people need to be aware of their surroundings, at all times, an expert says.

“We tell people to be situationally aware, and then also there’s a level of your own personal protection. And that can be from carrying a walking stick with you, to carrying some rocks in your hand,” said Doug Leier, a biologist for North Dakota Game and Fish.

If people see the mountain lion, they should call 911 or local authorities, such as the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, (701) 271-2900.

“Let us know immediately, so that we can, we can go out there and check on the situation and get that information reported back,” said Cass County Sheriff Jesse Jahner.

And the most important thing, do not approach the animal.

“You need to make sure that when you see that animal, it’s not like, ‘Oh, it’s OK. It’s fine. I’ll be OK’ … because there’s no guarantees. And the best thing that you can do is to try to make sure that you give those animals some space,” Leier said.

The last time there was a report of a mountain lion was in March 2025 near Horace, North Dakota.
