According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Minnesota Timberwolves have emerged as the latest team to express interest in the unrestricted free agent, joining the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers in the pursuit.

“After missing out on their pursuit of LeBron James, the Minnesota Timberwolves have also expressed interest in Kuminga with their starting power forward spot up for grabs and their $6.06 million taxpayer mid-level exception available for the taking, league sources told HoopsHype,” Scotto wrote.

While another suitor naturally increases Kuminga’s market, it does not necessarily mean Minnesota has the strongest path toward acquiring him.

From a basketball standpoint, the fit is easy to understand.

The Timberwolves recently traded Julius Randle to the Brooklyn Nets, creating a need for another athletic and versatile forward who can contribute on both ends of the floor. Kuminga checks those boxes and could fit well alongside Anthony Edwards as Minnesota continues to reshape its roster around its franchise star.

The challenge is not talent but logistics. Minnesota is operating just below the second apron and would almost certainly need Atlanta’s cooperation in a sign-and-trade to acquire Kuminga. That would force the Timberwolves to enter a bidding competition with the Lakers and Cavaliers while attempting to present a package that meets the Hawks’ expectations.

Minnesota may not have enough to entice Atlanta

The Timberwolves have already spent significant draft capital reshaping their roster this offseason. Minnesota surrendered an unprotected first-round pick, three first-round pick swaps and three second-round pick swaps in its trade for LaMelo Ball, leaving the organization with considerably fewer assets to use in another major transaction.

That reality could make it difficult for the Timberwolves to assemble a package that truly captures Atlanta’s attention. President of Basketball Operations Onsi Saleh has shown throughout the offseason that he is unwilling to complete a move simply for the sake of resolving a situation, especially when the Hawks still have the option of bringing Kuminga back.

If Atlanta moves Kuminga, the organization will expect meaningful value in return. Minnesota’s limited draft flexibility could make meeting that asking price difficult, particularly when compared with the Lakers and Cavaliers, which may have more appealing combinations of young players and future assets.

The Timberwolves could attempt to construct a broader multi-team deal, but that would introduce even more complications. Every additional team would need to receive value, salaries would have to match, and Atlanta would still need to believe the final return helps the organization now or strengthens its long-term outlook.

Minnesota’s interest makes sense, but interest alone does not guarantee it has a competitive offer. Unless the Timberwolves identify a creative framework that appeals to Atlanta, they may remain behind the other teams pursuing Kuminga.

The Lakers and Cavaliers remain the teams to watch

Even with Minnesota entering the conversation, Los Angeles still appears to be the team most aggressively pursuing Kuminga. The Lakers have remained connected to him throughout the process and continue searching for a framework that satisfies both sides.

The primary obstacle remains unchanged. Senior NBA insider Jake L. Fischer previously reported that the Hawks have no interest in taking back Jarred Vanderbilt’s contract, significantly complicating negotiations between the two organizations. Los Angeles may need to alter its offer or involve a third team before Atlanta becomes more receptive.

The Lakers still possess more appealing young players and draft capital than Minnesota appears able to offer. Their reported 2032 first-round pick swap remains an intriguing asset, although Atlanta has no reason to accept unwanted salary simply to acquire future draft compensation.

Cleveland also remains firmly involved and may possess enough draft capital to build a strong offer. However, reports have indicated the Cavaliers are reluctant to include meaningful draft compensation, which could prevent them from gaining serious momentum in negotiations.

Adding Minnesota to the sweepstakes makes Kuminga’s free agency more competitive, but it does not weaken Atlanta’s position. The Hawks possess his bird rights, continue to hold leverage in sign-and-trade discussions and have shown they are prepared to remain patient rather than accept an underwhelming return.

Training camp continues to approach, meaning every interested team will eventually need clarity regarding its roster. Whether Kuminga lands with the Lakers, Cavaliers or Timberwolves — or ultimately returns to Atlanta — the number of suitors continues to grow while the Hawks remain firmly in control of one of the offseason’s most prolonged storylines.

Add us as a preferred source on GoogleFollow

The Jonathan Kuminga saga continues to take unexpected turns.
