The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing veteran safety Rayshawn Jenkins to a one-year deal, according to former NFL safety Jahleel Addae on Twitter. Addae isn’t a typical NFL insider, but he and Jenkins were teammates for a few years with the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Steelers recently brought Jenkins in for a workout. He was among a number of safeties they took a look at, including Jordan Whitehead, showing that the team wanted to add depth at the position.

Jenkins has a solid resumé with 11 career interceptions, 34 pass defensed, four forced fumbles, and 5.5 sacks. He entered the league in 2017 with the Chargers, and he’s bounced around between a few different teams since then. That includes a stop in the AFC North with the Cleveland Browns last year.

Some fans might remember Jenkins for a taunting penalty that he committed against Pittsburgh in 2025. Hopefully, he learned from that mistake and doesn’t repeat it.

Jenkins is a well-rounded depth option at safety. While 32 years old, he still played in every game with the Browns last year, including three starts.

Now, he figures to battle a few other safeties in an effort to make Pittsburgh’s 53-man roster. DeShon Elliott is ticketed for one of the starting roles and free agent signee Jaquan Brisker will also play a lot, but it’s unclear how the rest of the division of labor will be distributed. Jalen Ramsey could also be counted as a safety, but it’s unclear how much time he’s going to see on the back end of the Steelers’ defense.

Sebastian Castro, Darnell Savage, and rookie Robert Spears-Jennings are among the safeties fighting for Steelers roster spots.

Savage is a veteran like Jenkins, so it feels like the two of them will be in competition. Meanwhile, the Steelers spent a seventh-round pick on Spears-Jennings earlier this year. Players taken that late tend to face uphill battles to making the final roster, and he may be in competition with Castro, the second-year man who played in eight games for the Steelers last season.

Jenkins is joining the Steelers late in the offseason, but he’s played for a number of teams before, showing that he can quickly adapt to new schemes. The Steelers’ safety room has a lot of bodies, and not all of them will stick around. We’ll see if Jenkins does enough to make it onto their regular season roster.
