Backwards walking<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">When it comes to walking, speed isn\u2019t the only thing that matters\u2014you can also benefit from changing direction. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a64443846\/walking-backwards\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a64443846\/walking-backwards\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Backwards walking\" data-node-id=\"21.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Backwards walking<\/a> is reported to have a huge range of health benefits\u2014not just for your body, but for your mind as well,\u201d says Skinner.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u201cWalking backwards has been suggested to improve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a65933669\/nordic-curls\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a65933669\/nordic-curls\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"hamstring\" data-node-id=\"22.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hamstring<\/a> flexibility, strengthen the muscles of the lower back, reduce risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a69178591\/knee-strengthening-exercises-workout\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a69178591\/knee-strengthening-exercises-workout\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"knee injuries\" data-node-id=\"22.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">knee injuries<\/a>\u2014since the pressure in the knee joints is reduced when traveling backwards\u2014and strengthen the ankle, because this joint is challenged more when walking backwards,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalking backwards has been suggested to improve hamstring flexibility\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"24\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Studies have also suggested that walking backwards\u2014known as \u201cretro-walking\u201d in academic circles\u2014can boost cognitive performance, including memory, reaction time and problem-solving skills. For instance, a Dutch <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1467-9280.2009.02342.x\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1467-9280.2009.02342.x\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"24.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a>, which tested participants\u2019 reaction times while stepping backwards, forwards or sideways, found that those walking backwards had the fastest reaction times.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Skinner only recommends backwards walking if you\u2019ve got a safe and comfortable space or route to do it\u2014\u201caway from traffic or other potential obstacles,\u201d but says it can be a good option for those who find walking to be tough on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a70773672\/how-to-keep-knees-healthy-aging\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a70773672\/how-to-keep-knees-healthy-aging\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"knees\" data-node-id=\"25.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">knees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"26\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u201cTo perform this exercise safely, make sure you&#8217;re familiar with your route, and that you walk at a reasonable pace,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>5. Walking yoga<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Walking is great, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a65403319\/walking-yoga\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a65403319\/walking-yoga\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"yoga\" data-node-id=\"28.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">yoga<\/a> is great\u2014so why not combine the two? \u201cIn the yoga\/mindfulness tradition, there are many forms of movement integrated with breath and mindful awareness, and walking can also fall within this category,\u201d says Skinner.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"29\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u201cWalking yoga might incorporate an intentional walk where the individual focuses on the present moment, and the integration of the mind, body and breath. It might also incorporate pausing for some moments to undertake simple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a19997406\/yoga-body-image-benefits\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a19997406\/yoga-body-image-benefits\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"yoga stretches\" data-node-id=\"29.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">yoga stretches<\/a>, or basic breath work practices,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"30\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u201cTo undertake a safe walking yoga practice, pick a comfortable and familiar route, and make sure you&#8217;re able to fully concentrate on the experience\u2014avoiding headphones, music, podcasts\u2014to fully bring oneself into the present moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>6. Japanese Interval Walking Technique<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"43\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Talking of interval walking, you may have heard of the Japanese Interval Walking Technique, also known as \u201cIntermittent Walking\u201d or \u201cInterval Walking Training\u201d, which has recently gained traction online.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"44\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Developed by researchers in Japan, the method is supported by the findings of a 2007<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0025619611613037\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0025619611613037\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\" study\" data-node-id=\"44.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> study<\/a>, which compared the effects of interval walking, moderate-intensity continuous walking, and no walking.
