Production on Amazon\u2019s God of War series is on hold following an injury to lead actor Ryan Hurst<\/a>, who suffered a severe bicep tear. Due to the extended recovery time required for the Kratos actor, the decision was made to recast the role, delaying production in Vancouver until October.<\/p>\n

Now, the studio is currently on the lookout for a new actor to play the Spartan, a setback that will certainly push the project further down the line. But this won\u2019t be the only recast coming to the series. Unlike the accidental injury that forced this first change, planned creative decisions for Season 2 will see two other major roles transition to new actors.<\/p>\n

\u2018God of War\u2019 S2 to Cast New Actors for Grown-Up Atreus and Thrud<\/p>\n

The possibility of an eventual new actor for Atreus has been on the radar for a while. Last year, casting calls for Season 1<\/a> featured a character codenamed \u201cJoshua.\u201d Described as a one-year series regular, the character profile matched Atreus in every aspect except the name, hinting that a different actor would step in once the series began adapting the events of Ragnar\u00f6k.<\/p>\n

Casting calls for Season 2 confirm those suspicions, as in May listings have gone out for a teenage version of \u201cJoshua\u201d (Atreus), alongside a teenage version of \u201cRuth,\u201d the codename for Thor\u2019s daughter, Thrud.<\/p>\n

While Callum Vinson and Island Austin are set to portray younger versions of Atreus and Thrud in Season 1, the next one will formally hand over the roles to an older cast. These calls were looking for actors between 14 and 17 years old, a notable jump from Season 1, which searched for performers in the 9 to 12 age range.<\/p>\n

The descriptions for the latest Season 2 casting additions read as follows:<\/p>\n

Teen Joshua (Atreus):<\/p>\n

After growing up in isolation in a cabin in the woods, Joshua went on a daring and dangerous adventure alongside his father that bonded the two of them but threw everything into question. At journey\u2019s end he came upon a revelation suggesting he may have a destiny greater than he could have imagined. When we find him in Season 2, Joshua is eager to learn more about the truth of who he is. He is empathetic, brave, and immensely curious about the world. But as he finds his new identity and grows into manhood, his trusting-nature leaves him vulnerable to manipulation. Must be comfortable with physical combat, especially archery.<\/p>\n

Teen Ruth (Thrud):<\/p>\n

Because of an incident that changed the course of her life, Ruth is wise beyond her years. Confident, intelligent, and sarcastic, Ruth\u2019s tough exterior masks a childlike vulnerability that causes her to be vindictive and cruel when hurt. Though she has a complicated relationship with her parents, Ruth shares a special connection with her grandfather, the king, and she believes he\u2019ll choose her to be the heir to the throne one day. Must be comfortable with physical combat.<\/p>\n

Judging by the details in these casting descriptions, it looks like Season 2 will kick off the events of Ragnar\u00f6k right away. Instead of stretching a title across multiple seasons like HBO\u2019s adaptation of The Last of Us, Amazon\u2019s God of War will be taking a direct approach where each season covers its respective game in the Nordic saga.<\/p>\n

As for the rest of the confirmed Season 1 cast, we are expecting to see many of the Nordic pantheon alongside other fan-favorite characters:<\/p>\n

Still, fans will need to be patient before seeing the events of the games translated to the small screen. Between the task of finding a new Kratos and the extensive reshoots required for the four episodes already filmed, this production shakeup could very well push the Prime Video premiere deep into 2028.<\/p>\n
