SEATTLE (TNND) \u2014 Seattle’s favorite internet celebrity<\/a> has received another unusual honor.<\/p>\n

Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson named Jimothy, the viral raccoon believed to have a rare spinal condition<\/a>, the state’s “Washingtonian of the Day,” praising the animal’s resilience after it captured the attention of millions online.<\/p>\n

The governor announced the informal recognition in a video posted to social media, saying Jimothy had “captured the hearts” of people across Washington and around the world.<\/p>\n

“I think one of the reasons why he’s captured so much attention is he shows a certain resilience in getting by and even thriving, given that deformity,” Ferguson said before bestowing the honorary title.<\/p>\n

Jimothy became an internet sensation in mid-July <\/a>after a video of the raccoon waddling through a Seattle neighborhood went viral. Wildlife experts believe the animal likely has short spine syndrome, a rare congenital condition that gives him his distinctive rounded appearance.<\/p>\n

Since then, Jimothy has inspired murals, bobbleheads, merchandise, tattoos and fan art. Seattle officials have embraced the furry celebrity, with city leaders planning a community celebration and proclaiming the summer of 2026 as “Jimothy Summer.”<\/p>\n

Despite the raccoon’s newfound fame, wildlife and public health officials continue urging fans to admire Jimothy from a distance. They warn against feeding or approaching him, noting that raccoons remain wild animals and can bite or scratch if threatened.<\/p>\n
