The trade sending Zaccharie Risacher – the first-overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft – to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Lu Dort and Ryan Nembhard was a controversial one. <\/a><\/p>\n

A clear immediate improvement for the Atlanta Hawks, Risacher is still a young, developing player with plenty of untapped potential. Maybe parting ways will ultimately be the best decision for both sides, as the Hawks look to compete, while the Mavericks continue the early stages of their post-Luka Doncic era rebuild.<\/p>\n

Putting the 2024 and 2025 first-overall picks on the same roster, Dallas will look to not only aid in Risacher’s trajectory as a league-ready contributor, but use him in ways Atlanta simply wasn’t able to. Not often, at least. <\/p>\n

Mavericks can use Risacher’s unique positional size to their advantage<\/p>\n

His size is one of the biggest reasons Atlanta took him as early as they did a few years back. <\/p>\n

Standing 6’8.5″ without shoes – as a player who operates primarily in off-ball action – he can give the Mavericks something they’ve been seeking as they look to build a competitive roster around Cooper Flagg. <\/p>\n

A spot-up shooter who can defend multiple positions, where he excels can perfectly complement their long-term vision. <\/p>\n

In fact, there’s a chance they’ll experiment some action with him in the backcourt. <\/p>\n

“Big lineups with Dereck (Lively II), Morez (Johnson Jr.), Cooper (Flagg), (Zaccharie) Risacher and some like Sergio (De Larrea) could be a real thing for us,” an anonymous Mavericks assistant coach <\/a>told Keith Smith of Spotrac. <\/p>\n

While it was in consideration while evaluating his potential long-term role in Atlanta, Risacher at the two never fully came to fruition. There wasn’t much incentive for the Hawks<\/a> to try it out often. What he needs is a chance to show all he can do, and it seems Dallas is going to give him a good shot. <\/p>\n

Next season could be bumpy, but there’s reason to believe in Risacher<\/p>\n

It made sense for the Hawks to send him to the bench – and eventually ship him off – when they did, but it’s less of an indictment on him, and more of a sign as to where they’re heading<\/a> as an organization. <\/p>\n

They have their core together, and now it’s time to compete. <\/p>\n

They don’t have room for a project, and that’s what Risacher is. For now. If he’s able to show some effectiveness in their backcourt – if they do end up trying it out – that could be a solid long-term answer for him, as well as a real confidence boost for the Mavericks. <\/p>\n
