{"id":800356,"date":"2026-08-03T02:22:07","date_gmt":"2026-08-03T02:22:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/800356\/"},"modified":"2026-08-03T02:22:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T02:22:07","slug":"wildfire-smoke-drifting-into-pierce-and-thurston-counties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/800356\/","title":{"rendered":"Wildfire smoke drifting into Pierce and Thurston counties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Western Washington \u2014 including Pierce and Thurston counties \u2014 will see increased wildfire smoke over the next few days.<\/p>\n<p>In a news release, the National Weather Service said winds will blow smoke from wildfires burning in Eastern Washington and Southern British Columbia into Western Washington, beginning Sunday evening and \u201ccontinuing into at least midweek.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dustin Guy, a meteorologist at The National Weather Service, told The News Tribune winds will blow smoke from wildfires burning in Eastern Washington and Southern British Columbia into Western Washington, beginning Sunday evening.<\/p>\n<p>Air quality will start to decline in the middle of the day on Monday, Guy said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we get into Tuesday, the smoke will start to get a little thicker,\u201d Guy said.<\/p>\n<p>Guy said more information would be up to the local clean air agency. The <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/pscleanair.gov\/\">Puget Sound Clean Air Agency<\/a> serves Pierce, King, Kitsap and Snohomish counties, while the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orcaa.org\/\">Olympic Region Clean Air Agency<\/a> serves Thurston, Clallam, Grays Harbor, Jefferson, Mason and Pacific counties.<\/p>\n<p>Air quality agencies measure air quality by the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ecology.wa.gov\/research-data\/monitoring-assessment\/air-quality-index\">Air Quality Index<\/a> (AQI):<\/p>\n<p>Good: 0-50Moderate: 51-100Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups: 101-150Unhealthy: 151-200Very Unhealthy: 201-300Hazardous: 301 or more.<\/p>\n<p>As of 3 p.m. on Sunday, the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency had a warning on its website, saying air quality will range from moderate to unhealthy for sensitive groups on Monday. On Tuesday, air quality will range from unhealthy for sensitive groups to unhealthy.<\/p>\n<p>The Olympic Region Clean Air Agency did not have any warnings on its website as of 3 p.m. on Sunday. The News Tribune was unable to reach ORCAA on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Temperatures are also expected to be hot, according to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/MapClick.php?lon=-122.441&amp;lat=47.254\">the NWS website<\/a>, with highs of 70, 77 and 80 degrees in Tacoma on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. In <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/MapClick.php?lon=-122.899&amp;lat=47.033\">Olympia<\/a>, temperatures are expected to reach 80 degrees on Monday, 89 degrees on Tuesday and 94 degrees on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>How can I stay safe?<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/wildfire-smoke-course\/who-increased-risk-health-effects-wildfire-smoke-exposure\">U.S. Environmental Protection Agency<\/a> (EPA) says some groups are more sensitive to wildfire smoke than others.
