{"id":800581,"date":"2026-08-03T05:34:28","date_gmt":"2026-08-03T05:34:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/800581\/"},"modified":"2026-08-03T05:34:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T05:34:28","slug":"city-still-has-active-contracts-with-corporation-it-sued-for-contamination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/800581\/","title":{"rendered":"CIty still has active contracts with corporation it sued for contamination"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON (7News) \u2014 For the last two years, 7News has reported on one of the largest construction companies in the District being accused of intentionally polluting the <a href=\"https:\/\/wjla.com\/topic\/Anacostia%20River\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Anacostia River<\/a> for more than a decade. <\/p>\n<p>The company now has to pay the city nearly half a million dollars for the alleged contamination.<\/p>\n<p>RELATED | <a href=\"https:\/\/wjla.com\/news\/local\/fort-myer-construction-fines-450000-overhaul-practices-dc-water-pollution-district-of-columbi-ward-5-facility-attorney-general-brian-schwalb-contractor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Fort Myer Construction to pay $450k, overhaul practices to curb DC water pollution<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a lawsuit filed by the Office of the Attorney General, the District alleges that, for nearly a decade, <a href=\"https:\/\/wjla.com\/topic\/Fort%20Myer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Fort Myer<\/a> Construction Corporation threatened D.C. residents&#8217; health and safety by polluting waterways and ignoring cleanup orders.<\/p>\n<p>7News first reported on Fort Myer back in 2024. The Office of the Attorney General filed a lawsuit against the corporation, alleging that Fort Myer allowed pollution to flow into District waterways for a decade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve known for a long time that a lot of different federal agencies were potentially responsible parties in the toxic cleanup and other ways the water has been polluted,\u201d said Anacostia River Keep Trey Sherard.<\/p>\n<p>7News spoke to Sherard when the transgressions were first revealed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re really mad about the violations that have been documented in this complaint by Fort Myer,\u201d said Sherard.<\/p>\n<p>The suit stated that Fort Myer continued to neglect its maintenance and kept discharging petroleum, soap, salt, sediment and other substances into D.C.\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/wjla.com\/topic\/Stormwater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">stormwater <\/a>drainage system and waterways.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It starts to get into the worms, insects, fish; at some point the fish gets into the people,&#8221; Sherard said.<\/p>\n<p>The suit highlighted that since 2015, the District\u2019s Department of Energy and Environment repeatedly inspected Fort Myer\u2019s facility and issued multiple notices of infraction, warnings and orders and stated that Fort Myer would not address the conditions at its facility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a corporation is already on a list of bad actors.
