The Jalen Duren saga has been an offseason-long endeavor. What began with reports that Duren could take free-agency meetings with the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings has now descended into an effective staring contest. Neither Duren nor the Detroit Pistons wants to budge from their positions, and according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, there’s no real end in sight to the situation.

“It seems both sides are dug in on their positioning,” Charania said. “The Pistons have a level, a threshold that they have for Jalen Duren. Jalen Duren clearly wants more than that. And so they are, I mean technically there’s not really a level of urgency quite yet. We’re still late July. We haven’t even hit August yet. This will go into August, well into August potentially. Would not surprise anyone involved in these negotiations if it does even go till September. The deadline is really media day. So we’ll see when Jalen Duren and his reps and the Pistons can find some common ground here.”

Based on that, it seems like there will be no closure on the Duren drama for a while.

Jalen Duren-Pistons situation could drag on for a while

Duren played a crucial role in the Pistons’ success last season. For his efforts, he earned his first All-Star nod and was named to the All-NBA Third Team. Unfortunately, his postseason play let the Pistons down.

When the playoffs came around, Duren was a ghost. He didn’t perform at the same level, and as a result, the Pistons flamed out in the second around (after almost losing to the eighth-seeded Orlando Magic in Round 1).

Now, Duren is a restricted free agent. That means, whatever offer he receives from another team can be matched by the Pistons. Or, the Pistons and Duren could come to an agreement on a new extension.

However, based on all the reporting that has come out this summer, there is a massive gap between what Duren wants and what the Pistons are willing to give him.

That’s what has led to this stalemate. And according to Charania, both sides are dug in. They are not willing to budge, and it seems like this situation could drag on for a while longer.

Duren doesn’t want to give up what he believes to be a massive payday that he earned last season. The Pistons don’t want to overpay and get themselves stuck in second-apron trouble down the line.

So, here we are. And here we’ll stay.
