It\u2019s no secret that Derek Carr didn\u2019t leave the Raiders in a good place with former head coach Josh McDaniels, and last week we learned one of the issues Carr had with McDaniels.<\/p>\n

Carr didn\u2019t mention McDaniels by name, but it seemed obvious who he was talking about, saying a coach told him to do one thing in a meeting and sent a different message in a game. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe only time I got into it with a coach was that. [The coach] literally was like in the team meeting \u2018You should have thrown this.\u2019 I said \u2018Hold on, bro.\u2019 And that\u2019s probably why I\u2019m not there anymore,\u201d Carr said on his Home Grown with David & Derek Carr<\/a> podcast. <\/p>\n

\u2018You said middle open, middle closed, it\u2019s single high, I went middle closed and guess what. It\u2019s not open. You\u2019re telling me now I need to come over here?\u2019 I did exactly what you told me to do.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Since leaving the Raiders, Carr has talked a few times about not having anything against McDaniels, but it\u2019s hard to imagine he believes McDaniels was the best head coach for the team in his final two years with the team.<\/p>\n

Carr talked about his departure from the Raiders in 2024<\/p>\n

Appearing on the\u00a0Two G\u2019s in a Pod<\/a>\u00a0podcast in 2024, Carr shared parts of his last conversation with McDaniels as a member of the Raiders and disclosed the reason they gave for benching him at the end of the season\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cI sat there with a pretty dumbfounded face and I said \u2018I didn\u2019t think nine years of work would end like this\u2019 and they both said \u2018Well, no. We don\u2019t want it to end.\u2019 And I was like \u2018No, I think we\u2019re past that.\u2019<\/p>\n

I told Josh [McDaniels] when I was in there. I said \u2018Thank you. I appreciate it, guys.\u2019 I think a lot of things, but thank goodness I can keep them in sometimes. In that moment I [didn\u2019t] want to hurt any relationships. I [didn\u2019t] want to say something stupid. You never know what the future holds\u2026\u201c<\/p>\n

Carr said he asked McDaniels and Ziegler why he was being benched and they said it was because they wanted to get a look at the other quarterbacks on the roster\u2026<\/p>\n

\"Raiders<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI was like \u2018Why?\u2019 and they were like \u2018Honestly, we want to see what these two guys can do so we know what we have going into next year. And I said \u2018Hey, That\u2019s your decision. Ok. Got it. I\u2019m a grown man. I\u2019m not going to sit here and try to talk you out of a decision you want to make.\u2019<\/p>\n

I have talked to Josh since then. I\u2019ve texted him. They beat a team and I texted him and said \u2018That\u2019s awesome. Congrats. He texted me right back when we had a big game and so\u2026 I try my best to make every relationship alright and cool no matter what the situation is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked if he had any feelings of vindication when McDaniels and Ziegler were fired and Carr said he did not\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t need to say anything. Things played out the way they played out and we only went 9-8. Yeah, we had a winning record, but we didn\u2019t make the playoffs. So, at the end of the day, who am I to say anything?\u00a0<\/p>\n

My heart actually felt for [Josh] because I knew his kids and knew his family. I know what it\u2019s like to get released\u2026 that crap sucks\u2026 So I felt for Dave and I felt for Josh because one-on-one when you\u2019re with them, they\u2019re not bad people. They\u2019re trying their best. They\u2019re doing their best to do what they think is right\u2026 and I get all that. It\u2019s a business. I really didn\u2019t have a feeling of \u2018I told you\u2019 or any of that kind of stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n
